DIY Parametric speaker (in kit form)

I stumbled across an interesting kit today in Yongsan electronics area that a student at one of the local Universities had put together. Kit was from Nicera.co.jp
It was a parametric speaker. Very cool!! :eg::evil::evil::evil:
For those who are unfamiliar with Parametric speakers, these are highly directional speakers that utilize an ultrasonic carrier wave (~40Khz) to carry audible sound frequency waves to a very tightly focussed location (much in the same way a laser does).
Several companies already make VERY expensive directional Parametric speaker systems for entertainment and law enforcement, notably the (LRAD) area denial system for law enforcement and military.

A little warning about this speaker system is that it can cause some people
to feel nauseous or disorientated.
My experience today was not like this. The device in question was hooked up to a Galaxy tab S3 and was playing classical music (Mozart) using Neutron player for Android.
The effect of this speaker system was quite simply astounding. Standing right beside this system nothing could be heard, however, standing directly in front however, full stereo audio that sounded as though you were inside an auditorium with "live" music (a little distorted).
Also another interesting effect of this speaker is the ability to project sound to an area and have it reflect back to make it seem like sound is coming from specific objects in a given area. Hours of fun!!
Today I heard mozart come from a book for the first time. Pretty strange. The pages became the speaker.
Mind blown!! :drool: :)

I hope someone here has some fun with the above circuit diagram and tries
it out. I'll tell you that I am really wanting to try this out sooner than later.

I remember seeing something about this a few years back, they were targeting covert communication links as an application. The idea was that you could inform someone in a crowded room without anyone else but the target hearing, and without the target having to have some device on them, as with a radio headset/earpiece.

Correct, that is at least what the student was intending on doing with it for his project. Target advertising.
I should point out that because this driver does not use a DSP, there is some significant distortion in the audio. While I could hear Mozart in both ears from stepping into the beam path it was a bit like a surround radio broadcast from 360 degrees.
Little to no base present.

However despite the shortcoming, it was a REALLY interesting experience.
I would like to try to build one at some point. :beer::beer:
 
wow i am tempted to buy that kit!
