dc-dc voltage step up HUGE!!!

Ok, so, stupid question, but if I wire them in serries the voltage adds, right? So If I want more voltage I can just put them in serries, right?

Thanks,
Liam.

Hi ,

for capacitors yes in series the voltage will add up , Example - 2 160 volt rated capacitors in series would give 320 volts rating , but when capacitors are in series the value goes down so 2 160v capacitors , say they are both 100uF each at 160 volts , then the two caps would give a Cap = to 50uF at 320 Volts ,

my 600j bank is 10 caps at 160v , 3900 uF each , 5 parrallel sets of 2 in series to give a 320 volt 9000 and something uF Bank .

here is a series / parralel caulator for capacitors

Electronics 2000 | Series / Parallel Capacitor Calculator

Hope this helps , good luck : ) ( if any of my info is wrong please correct me :) )

are you using balancing resistors on your bank?

I have finally settled on 2 sets of 10 parrallel connected 450V caps in series for a total of 24mF(milli) @ 900V. Approximatly 5Kj. Should be pretty nasty. Need to buy 10 more caps, and get some balancing resistors.

More of a shocker if you use those circuits - no where near the voltage of say the average 50,000 volt tazer. Unloaded (no caps) the camera's output roughtly 600-700 volts, and for a short period before they fry themselves (transistor not up to the job).

If you shock someone with a "camera" tazer all your going to do is piss them off.

worst shock i've ever experienced was from a disposable camera discharging it's cap on me.
it left burn marks.

Hi , Nope didnt have any balancing resistors with 5 sets of 2 caps i never botherd about it

I just ordered my copper bus bar :)

should have it next week. Then my bank will really begin to take shape.

I'll be starting at 450V (all in parrallel), and later order a centre bar to split the bank into a 900V one :)

Yes the shock from a disposable camera is unpleasant and could do some damage in the right circumstances. IT certainly isn't anything like a tazer however. The tazer has a far far higher average output wattage, abeit much lower current per charge cycle but at far higher voltages. However, the shock from a large commercial camera flash unit fully charged is something entirely different. There is enough instantaneous current (~0.8-1KA) in a large flash cap to blow off fingers and or cause broken bones end result in defibrillation.
Having made my own working tazer ... a 65KV unit from plans taken from a working airtazer model I know what goes into making them.

Some of those commercial photographic strobe caps actually have more power than a hospital defibrillator. Scary!
