There has been a lot of talk lately about IF you did manage to get one of the companies that won't ship to the USA Lasers >5mw anymore, if it would still get here, if you could convince them to accept another form of payment and whether it would still make it through Customs or not.

Well I'm here to tell you, I ordered an item from one of the well know companies, and while I won't give too much detail.  It was properly declared on the form and is legal to import, no doubt.  The large padded self-sealing envelope was clearly slice opened and re-sealed with ordinary packaging tape.  There was an Orange Customs inspection label placed over the declarations form, a large hand-written 4 digit number written in black marker, circled in red was next to the label. (never seen that before).

Inside the padded envelope was even more interesting.

The item I ordered was sealed in a box in that padded envelope, it was clearly cut open, top and bottom, you can see the slice marks across the box flaps, the Styrofoam Peanuts were spilled into the padded envelope, as they did NOT even bother to attempt to re-seal the box contained within; some Styrofoam Peanuts were still in the cut open box, but many had fallen out.

Other than that my item did arrive "safe" as in, it was not broken, but very poorly "re-sealed" though.

Bottom line here folks, they ARE watching what is coming into this country; it would seem they have stepped-up enforcement, as this has never happen before with that same company; and NO before anyone asks, I didn't use EMS.

Be careful out there, someone is going to be made an example of; they are watching, and probably are reading this Forum.

Be smart, stay safe.....it isn't worth it.

Yeeesh. That's scary. I'm waiting for a package from Aixiz. Hopefully I get it. :-/

Ya man -- the Big Bro is lookin ---

Just a thought --
1.  How many people have been hurt by hobby lasers?
2.  How many people have been hurt by tomatos ?
3.  How much financial damage has been done to the tomato market?
4.  Are peppers the problem?
5.  How many people have been hurt by bad pharmacuticals (drugs)?
6.  How much does this "government agency" cost us for this "service"?

Mike

"lasers are illegal and we are stopping them from being imported!" "illegal drugs and guns are okay though"

I recieved my 150mW focusable laser on the 8th. it was shiped on the 4th. EMS shipping?
and even then, it wasnt checked...

electron,

Before you get all paranoid on us, Consider this. There are such things as random inspections.
Of all the packages that I have received through the normal method (too many to count), To this day,
NONE have been handed over to customs.

However, just the other day, I received a package that was sent by the FORBIDDEN method that made it
through customs without being opened. Go figure.

If it had been inspected, I would have been out $623 and some change. :-/

I had a package from England inspected by US Customs a little over a week ago. The played with it for a couple of days. It was legal. They sent it on to me. The repacking job that customs did was MUCH LESS THAN professional. I consider myself lucky that the laser had its own protective case.

Peace,
dave

Yeah Dave,

You win some and you lose some.
The problem with mine was,  The declaration form was not what I'd call truthful.  Get my drift?
I was sweating bullets for awhile. ;D
I am,  Needless to say,  Extremely happy  it all worked out in the end. 8-)

There are WAY TOO MANY packages coming into this country to be able to inspect them all, so 'random" is the name of the game. That's why the FDA went after PayPal. Threaten to cut off the funds and you can get amazing cooperation from companies. Of course, customs employees are human so they will look at the easier ones to get to. That's why EMS has a higher percentage of packages inspected.

It has now become a business factor in buying lasers. If yours is caught, you lose it.

Peace,
dave

I'm not sure what your point is here, I was simply stating exactly what happened on a package of mine, and NO it's far from the first package I ever ordered or ever received from overseas.  What you chose to do or not do is purely up to you.  Maybe next time around I won't share the info, instead we could wait for someone to get busted........now that would be much better right??

Anyhow, I already shared this with the vendor and I found out I'm not the only one that has reported this back to them just recently.

Do as you wish with this info, it won't affect me personally in any way.

Relax,

You're among friends here. No need to get hostile with your response.
I was just pointing out that you mentioned that "they ARE watching what is coming into this country"
Like no shit. It IS their job. Do you listen to Coast to Coast AM by any chance?

Random inspections mean exactly that. RANDOM. Have a nice day. ;)

I've recieved alot of mail, and only one has been opened by customs. It was a giant parcel from DX with like 30 things in it, including red and green laser modules, I still got em :)

None of my dealextreme packages have ever been inspected... but customs did inspect my package of magnets from kenom.
