Connecting A laser Diode/Driver to a 7805 Voltage Regulator

You may find this easier to follow then. Just ignore the pot, and go with only a resistor:

Alright then I Just go with LM317, Laser Diode, and 2x Resistors. Ordering the Laser today and going to the local electronics shop to get parts. I will take pictures and let you know if it works ! hopefully i do this right !

There's no reason that you'd need to use 2x resistors. Honestly, I've never understood why the (common) diagram above shows two resistors in parallel. I *guess* 10 ohm resistors are a common resistance, so it makes sense to show two in parallel instead of just writing "5 ohms" - but I think it's just confusing.

Replace all of the resistance crap (the two resistors and the single pot) with just one resistor.

Also, though you may not want the additional parts, it IS worth adding that output capacitor.

I had to wait on ordering the laser but I have the resistors and everything that i need to build what you showed me.

Another thing is.. I gave that dumb idea of connecting a laser pen with a 7805 regulator and it works. The gun is shooting the laser and everything seems to be fine as of right now.

Next Question is... is there a safe GREEN LASER that I could buy and do the same thing with? You know about all the wavelengths/classes so you seem like the perfect person to ask. The laser only flashes for 1 second every time the trigger is pulled. So exposure is minimal.

Awesome.. This will be safe though correct... with the lens?

With the filter?

You really don't know for sure unless you get them measured. These modules are frequently OVER spec, which in this case is a bad thing. If you're going to be ordering a bunch, I might encourage you to have them sent to someone on the forum with an LPM first, then they can measure the output, adjust down the pot (if necessarily), epoxy the pot in place, and then ship them on to you with a tested <5mW output.

There are a number of reputable people on the board that would probably do this. If you were ordering like 10x of them, I'm sure someone could zoom through those in 30 minutes, and you'd maybe only have to toss them a few dollars a module, plus shipping.

I was probably only going to get a couple to see if I can get it to work. With the filter though it should be relatively safe? 1 second exposure max and most of the time there is no contact on people but the vest itself.

But safety first so whats "LPM"? and you recommend i have these tuned before throwing them in a gun?

Thank you for your help, your awesome !

Nope, even with the filter you're not relatively safe. Those modules could be 5mW as advertised. They could also be 40mW, or 20, or 60, etc. It's impossible to know.

LPM is "Laser Power Meter", and it's what you use to test the power of a laser's output.

Alright so they definitely need to be tested then. Thank you ! Cant the lasers be adjusted with a little dial on them? how much are those LPM things.. probably be easier to just do what you said.

Ill give this a shot :-) You have helped a lot
Thank You !

You probably actually want to send it to someone with an LPM that they specifically know is suitable for lower powers.

Yes, there will be a pot to adjust the output. But that doesn't help you, you can't eyeball it.

Can't i just use 1 of your high powered lasers that you build? It is after all Lazer Tag and the object of the game is to go around shooting the ENEMY players :-)

Thank you for your help, when im able im going to order those pointers and hopefully send them to someone who wont rip me off. I don't suppose you know how to do that sort of thing?
