** catched by police yesterday night **

That football player issue... That was in Spain or Portugal I think.

I shined all my lasers this night and none was taken(netherlands) but neither i saw a cop or police car.
When i will see and talk to a cop i will say it is legal, and if he says it is not il ask him to read the law for me...
I dont know if the police have the rights here to just take what they want?
But i will say no if possible.
I wish there were more cops like eudamonium encountered. Show some interest and say "hey nice!"

Better to carry a small laser worth less $ in public if you must play there, keep
the expensive one's at home or on your own property where the law has no business !

Happy New Year :D

I have a 5mW greenie... and you can easily see the beam at night. Looking at the dot up close in the dark is very bright too. I'm sure a cheap true 30-50mW up close would convice may officers. Especially if you were and protest them taking your cheapie laser.

Remember, when you are shining the laser the beam looks MUCH brighter than observing the beam.

I am just a little suspicious since he/she won't say where he/she lives. A lot of us have where we live below our avatars, I don't know why it is such a big secret. I say show us a picture of the ticket and blank out the name and address and any other personal information. No proof I call bullshit!

Damn I'm mad.... a 400mw o-like greenie too. Despite your 'gentle' treatment from the cops I'd be fuming mad & fighting this since you were not misusing the laser or doing anything arguably 'wrong' :yabbmad:

It's 40 hours that i feel POISONED, just thinking every minute the last message of Susie:

"Sorry for your long delay, for this time you had to wait, we choosed one of the best units for you.."

:can:

Sorry to hear about your loss. Well, maybe if you saw them coming you would bury it in the sand. Then maybe start walking down the beach. When trying to find it with the police, there's no way to find it again. Too many grains of sand, and without evidence where's the crime? :)

im a "he". "she" is just a model.

didnt want to post cntry in this thread just for avoid search engines give c0ps a nice ideas and tricks of people how to avoid laser being picked.

Anyway, my loc. is IT.i told it in pm to anyone who askd.

and i would LOVE to be a BS.. so i still would have my greeny.

I called my cousin, he works for pol1ce, he said that show a cheap one, while they see a bright beam from 1 km/mile, is such a bad idea.. as i thought, if they pocket you, and realize you are trying to hide something and act in a suspicious behaviour, you go to jail.

He see what he can do with my unit in next few days.

INSTEAD, MY COUSIN TOLD ME THIS NICE SUGGESTION:

He told me to get and take with me some paper, from some professional studio, or research lab, that just show you can/could/did handle/d a laser, for professional application,
studying research or something similar, that just give the idea that you are not a stupid moron and just know how to handle this stuff, and he said that 50% they
could let you go with your unit. He said, that sometime, just a simple specification paper, may help.

also a self declaration where you explain you know all the safety misures needed to handle a laser, could be impressive to them.

Anyway, anything above 5mw will be seized, and something of 50/100mw can be considered offense weapon.

He said he will go the station, telling i am not a moron but a professional photographer, so there is chance i can get the olike back in few days :)

will keep you updated guys!

It's not exactly that they've shown interest, at least now much, they just provided some sort of reply to walk away "Very nice" being most common, but not as in expression of interest in those things.

Remember, when you are shining the laser the beam looks MUCH brighter than observing the beam.
LOL! What?

He's saying that to the person operating the laser, viewing the beam from the origination point, the beam is going to appear brighter than to say, someone driving along parallel to your laser beam and looking over at it.

Sorry to hear that. However, I think that such high power lasers should not be used outdoors for the sake the public and the user as well. No matter how careful you are, slips can always happen, and when it happens in public, the result can be no good.

Does that mean you'd have to use them only indoors to be safe, or could you use them on your property hitting surrounding trees/sky? I use mine every night from my balcony but always click em off quick when I hear a car.

Just carry with you also a "cheap" 50/60mW one, maybe potmodded, as "decoy" ..... still enough for make a visible beam in foggy or low light ambient (also in daylight, and you can always say that the batteries are weak ..... and if potmodded and it burn when they try it, you can also claim they burned it :p), and for sure less bad to have it confiscated than the others ;)

EDIT: also, it ofcourse depend from the country, but at least here, the "law" about lasers (in reality, an ordnance 18/07/1998 from ministry of health, not a real law), prohibites import and commercialization of anything over 1mW (class 3 and over), but say nothing precise about possession and use ..... also, the art. 3 say that it does not apply, if the lasers are for "specific professional use", and with a paper that advise about all the safety and rules needed ..... maybe this can help, who know ?

If I were you, I wouldn't have handed it over unless they threatened to arrest me. Even so, I would only have handed it over at the police station.

Also, the following may not be the best idea, but it's something to think about:

If someone says it's illegal, say that you are a "licensed laser operator for a local astronomy club." If they ask to see the license, tell them that it's not like a driver's license that you carry around, but a large stack of papers in your office.
