Building a Blue-Ray laser would be GREAT! But...

Well, I don't think anyone was saying that you were going to be irresponsible or dumb with it just cause your a kid. It seems like you understand the risks enough and there are alot of very clever kids your age who are responsible enough to handle a high power laser.

The thing is that you are not an adult and you cant be held responsible for your actions yet. Even if you acknowledge and fully understand the risks involved, the law still says you cant make that decision.

As for the pocket mini kit/lava/PHR, I agree that it is an expensive build for you, but if you want you can always just do a bare aixiz build just to get your foot in the door.

An aixiz is about $4 then a PHR is 9$ and a rkcstr driver is about another $18. So you could build a working laser for about $30

EDIT: Gata has a good idea, see if your paps will help you.

I-Hacked.com Taking Advantage Of Technology - Building a High-Power Blu-Ray Laser I've seen this, it looks pretty simple and cheap!
 
That will actually cost you about $80 plus about another 15-20 for all the shipping(if you used his links).

And if you do decide to do that, just make sure you remove the ribbon cable from the diode so you dont have any problems from it.

I actually used that site to make my first laser just a little while ago.

Any idea of videos showing you how to make a blue-ray laser that is pretty cheap? It would be great if it had a host also...

you are going to need a driver with that. just take the lead wires that are sticking out and connect them to a rkcstr driver. then you can do something like this.

It was a general statement, nothing personal.

To be completely responsible you should make sure you have enough money to get goggles along with your laser. These lasers are well over 100X times (some over 200-400X) more powerful than those cheap red laser pointers you can buy. Their power should never be taken lightly because just the reflection can have a catastrophic effect. And there are no second chances. You can have fun, but safety is always first. Lastley never let anyone use it, because like most people, its not theirs and they wont care no matter how much you warn them.

In this photo You could fold the case pin over apply some solder
and use the mod housing for the neg..."case neg".

It's just a suggestion... I have seen fried diodes cause of the clips being so close as to touch.:)
 
this o-like driver uses a vcc+ for a case positive set up.

I have it all set up case positive but it was just easier to clip the wire sticking out the bottom.

But he is right so do not try this at home. use the case to keep the clips clear.
 
Just get a soldering iron and practice with it first a bit.
Like try soldering pieces of wires together for practice.

Try a phr first. It's relatively simple.
Just don't go over 100ma like I did lol. Blew my first phr this way haha.
 
no offense Sa2fan. but I am glad that these folks aren't building the laser for you.
I think going through the building process on your own will help build some responsibility not only that but give you knowledge that few people possess.

I don't think you are dumb. I think you are curious. curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction cannot bring your sight back. and all it takes is a fraction of a second of exposure from alot of these lasers to cause PERMANENT damage.

shortly after reading this thread and saw that Glutton was thinking about building you a laser I almost hurled. the reason is.
I work in a school around a bunch of kids your age. I work with computers they don't make braille monitors and the thought of a kid with one of them in the hallway that all I have to do is turn a corner and possibly be blind the rest of my life sickens me.
IMO no one under the age of 18 should be able to purchase a laser more than 2-3 mW. now building one to me is a whole different story. building something generally gives you respect for it.

the first one I built I used a flexdrive preset to the current I wanted. a diode and axiz module +10.00 cheapy ebay 3 AAA flashlight. there was some soldering involved however I did not have a multimeter.
total build not including soldering iron about $50.00

I don't have beam shots however it would light matches, burn through black tape and black jewel cases. unfortunately since then in my tinkering I killed the diode but have more blues on the way.
