BMW i8 uses laser's

It uses Osram LD's 4 of them to pump phosphor.

As an avid car person, the i8's and Audi's laser headlights are not legal in the USA because the feds are worried in the event of a collision, the optics may become misaligned and permit high intensity laser radiation to escape the headlight enclosure. Lame

But yes, the technology has been tossed around in various car articles for a few years now. It's kinda cool, but still way inferior to HID's in actually seeing the road imo

I believe they include some sensors there if there is any potential damage (like high accelration during crash and/or headlight integrity is somehow damaged etc.) the lamps just switch off to prevent leaking laser beams. Something like this happens with airbags AFAIK. For use of this technology comercially there has to be done a lot of safety testing IMO.

I work for a company in which there is beside others also automotive sector included in many subsidiaries (producing metal body parts, frames, chasis parts etc. and even we produce own product - heavy terrain trucks) and there is a lot of testing before final product is released AFAIK and every vehicle is tested individually as well.
The same has to be done for every essential component - especially for potentially dangerous one like these headlights.

I believe they are illegal here in WA. The truck ones for sure.

Think they are illegal most places, even across Canada. However, in the NWT, we don't even have annual safety inspections (read, any at all) so things like lights/tinted windows/emissions definitely don't have any sort of regulation or enforcement.

We have QED inspections here, but my car is immune to them, so I don't have to show up for any inspections either. That doesn't mean that I can't be pulled over for illegal options if they were on my car. I have tinted windows which is great during the daylight hours, but a pain in dark areas when it's pouring rain at the same time.

I wonder what those headlights look like to oncoming traffic. If it throws that much further, it is probably blinding in high beam setting.

From what I understand the laser is only high beam and if like the high beams in the X5 model the high beams are automatic when the car senses a clear road. Probably can not be activated even if you pull it for quick or toggle on manual high beams if it does not detect a clear road.

I bet you can not flash someone in front of you or turn them on when there is oncoming traffic.

That's a shame as I have often had to turn my high beams on to get some idiot in oncoming traffic to turns his off. Many won't even respond to a quick flash of the high beams, but always do when I turn mine on and leave them on until they turn their's off.

Paul, don't you think at least 1 of you should be able to see where you're going?
Some poor guy may have nothing but high beams, give them a flash and then ignore stupid people, the road is full of them.
Funny you would stun someone you think is being rude and hope they don't crash into you or run off the road.

Sounds a bit selfish rather than liberal, where's all this tolerance you are supposed to have?
Maybe they are protesting Rodney king...err white priveledge?

i have a german car and i have hid and the move automatic when traffic is coming the move down and move back up,
when i drive in a curve the lights start moving in the direction am steering at its kinda nice, :)
nice video redcowboy :)

@RedCowboy

I have been on dark highways many times in my long life and though I used to flash my high beams, there were too many who would ignore it. Since I started just putting mine on, everyone has turned their high beams off and never once saw someone with only those for headlights. Must have been Georgia boys.

Had someone driving behind me with their high beams on in the middle of town a couple months ago. Pulled over, stopped, pulled out behind them and stuck mine on. It was only for ~10 seconds or so (just before my turn) but hopefully I made my point... I'm having to become one of the terrible drivers in this town just to get through the day!

I guess we could start a thread on pet peeves about driving. I also hate it when people don't use their turn signals while I am waiting to turn, only to find, if they had, I could have turned several minutes earlier. When someone has their brights on behind you, what you did is the only recourse, as far as I know. :D

How about installing our own? I suppose some cop would come after us for illegal headlights if he sees something different though. Edit: Nevermind, illegal is illegal. Subject to the almighty rule of law put in place by unelected rulers. I call those laws null and void in my mind, doesn't stop enforcement though.

Sounds like a good thread to me. Although it may sound like a place for plain moaning. :p

Alaskan, best not. ;)

I've wanted a rocket launcher on my truck a few times, good thing I don't have one.

Now that would not be a good idea. However I like the idea. :shhh::eg:
