Well, it makes sense actually.. I was thinking of trying the same thing, once i get my blue ray.. Since it's a red match, it reflects most of the light coming from a red laser, but for a blue one it should work almost as good as a black one..

Nice! Good to know the blue rays are capable of this.. And the current doesn't seem too high either..

I'd say it's equally visible as a red 5mw or so. In the dark, you may be able to see the beam, if there's enough dust in the air. Otherwise, use fog.

Overdriving is a subjective word, just because a lot of us have found different tolerances on these diodes. 45ma for some may put out the same as 38ma on another diode. But I don't think anyone has been going above 50ma. I could be wrong, though.

Don't use the blue (violet) and red at the same time. You could overheat your diode. Add to that, the focal length for 650nm light and 405nm is going to be different. You would not get a proper dot of red and blue.

I know they need different focal lengths, but i read in this very thread, that both were used together sucessfully and give a nice colour beam (purple?), but that it's hard to focus them into a line.. I think pencil thickness was the comparison used..

I don't think heat would be such a big problem here, even with both on, since the power going through the LD would still be quite low in comparison with red lasers..

I could be wrong tho (if the efficiency is that much lower), but those who have tried both at the same time should know more about this.

Is it possible to order aixiz modules with it? just the modules, no kit.. I couldn't find this option on your site.. How much would this cost?

Maybe you have a freak diode. It doesn't look in the video like you have it focused to a pin prick, but rather a small dot. I don't get it.. ;D
 
For me, at about 3ft distance, when the BluRay was focused to a pinpoint, the red was about the size of a quarter. I didn't try at long distances - I assumed it would be worse.
I suppose there might be a color-corrected lens that would do better.

I think it was a small dot but the camera was blinded. That big splotch wouldn't light a match.

I am sure it was focused too...I am amazed at how fast it lit. I wonder what the secret is?.... :P Maybe Daedal is using a special lens.
 
Well Gazoo --- It's all carnival tricks.    It was less than 12", over 45 mA and he used a special preheated match.    ;D  ;D  ;D

Hey DDL -- Nice job.  I can't believe that I could smoke a match and not get fire.   I was at a disadvantage, I burned up my best diode  :(  They are all good however like sEx  :D

I think there was an IR diode somewhere we couldn't see ;D

I even went and dug out a red paper match - for me it did even less than the sharpied white ones - at least those tried to smoke a little, but that was after 60sec or so.

well, mine worked fine all day today. i put it in my pocket, drove home. and now it is very dim...tried new batteries, still same thing. does this mean its dead? :'( it worked perfectly fine, got home and took it out of my pocket and it was dim. no instant brightness or anything

I've found these LD's to be fairly rugged within limits.  We need to know what your power source is and how well heat sinked.  Mine turned on in my pocket today and then it fell out of my coat pocket twice  >:(   It still works OK.

Is it possable that your regulator failed ?  How much current did you have it set at ??  We have no reports yet of multi hours reliability at over 35 mA.

im kind of hoping the button was pressed the whole time i drove home and that killed it, rather than dieing from my power source.

please done flame me, but power source was only 4 AAA alkaline batteries with only a 47 ohm resistor.
if it was to ever die, i was thinking it would slowly get worse and worse. i just found it odd it instantly went dim like that.

Did you measure your current ? Did you have a capacitor across the diode ??

My calculations indicate that you didn't have too much current using a 47 ohm series resistor. Unless something shorted out bypassing the resistor. Are you sure the resistor was wired in series with the diode ?
