** BluRay Diode GB **

Vell - now to get down to the surgery to extract the precious one !!  Nurse -- I vill need a scalpel here.   Yes  -- I see it in there !!

Mike

Aside from that, I've never seen soldering to that precision. It's almost to good to tear apart.

I hated taking it apart myself too ;D

Glad to her you guys got them too :D

The LD came out easier than a 20x DVD !!  Lotts of static control here because it's getting colder.

Easy power up mounted in an Aixiz module.  5 mW ---33.5 mA drive using a simple LM317 supply.
I stopped there for now -- gotta get paper to graph this .......  Pretty beam     ;D

I'm also using the plastic Aixiz lens module and I don't yet see much flourescence.  I will try glass later.

A big thanks to DDL  :) :D :)

Mike

Gritting teeth here --- 8.62 mW at 40 mA -- Not bad but I'm using my LPM-1 meter set at 473 nM and I don't have a calibration curve for this. I'll try another meter soon.

Would anyone be interested in taking one of these and turning it into a sonar laser (using sonar case) for me? If you are interested, PM me with a price quote.

Spy ---
Building these is what the hobby is all about. That's why we share info on this.

Who wants to brag about having someone elses unique laser :o

Mike

Well I am getting more tempted to tear into mine. So far I have looked at it...lol. I have parts coming but I do have the parts here to do it temporarily.

Mike, how did you de-solder the mylar. It's easy with only three pins but this has five.

@hemlock, Trust me, I have tried making lasers. Its all too complicated for me, where to get the right parts, and how diodes are easily killed. I have killed my lightscribe dvd burner diode already. Im bad with electronics.

Gazoo --

I added solder to all the pins with my 25 watt iron.  The diode was in a small vice for heatsinking.
In about 1 second, all the pins wetted and the circuit board fell off !!!

I added my cap to the Vld pin to ground plus small wires and it is a go ....

Update:  The damn thing seems to get better as I watch it  :D

Now ------ 41 mA LD current ---------------

PO using the LPM-1 set at 473 nM     ----   9.21 mW
PO using SPER scientific with correction curve ----- 11.58 mW

It's late and I may be overlooking something.  Cooling is passive using only the Aixiz module.

Mike

Also for those interested: at 40 mA, I read 4.67 volts across the LD junction.

Sweet..and thanks for that. I think I can get the mylar off without killing it, but I am thinking about leaving it in it's native heatsink while mounted in the vice. Once off, the capacitor will be put on as quickly as I can. I wonder if we should put a capacitor across the red and ground pins too? I plan on using the red too, but blu comes first.

That little heatsink clip is easily cut off with good side cutters. I mounted mine in an Aixiz quickly.
Yes., I'd add a cap to both leads if I was to drive both B&R. Right now, I'm happy with that blu beam. I'm using a sheet of typing paper set about 4' away as my target -- lights up good .....

Mike

Well I got the two screws out and I can see the diode will easily come out of its heatsink. I think I am going to get started on this.. :P Gotta get out my ESD mat and clip. It will be the first time I have used it...lol.

;D

You guys are quick to start the mayhem... err... fun ;) :P ;D

Mike! I like the numbers you've got there... I'll measure it with the thermal meter later on and give you a correction for the 473nm setting on the LPM :)

The voltage across the diode is perfect. These things like about 4.5V and run even better with about 5V and a nice heatsink ;) Ideas are flashing by so quickly now in my head... ;D

My next setup just might be a pointer style in a flashlight host with a SMD amp circuit... homemade :P I have all the parts... just have to find the time :-[

GL Gazoo :)

Come on people, don't be so mean. Show off a couple pics.. :) Anxious to see how they look. Maybe of the guttin process, or just the pretty colour. :) :)

So do they use 4.6v or 5v? Or does it depend how much over the threshold the power is?

Daedal,
Thanks for the luck...it works! I did a very quick and dirty wiring job until I get the parts I really want to use. Man the color is beautiful....like "special"... ;D

This diode is very easy to harvest. I pressed out out of the heatsink with the tips of my fingernails!

The mylar was a pain in the butt for me to remove...I was so scared I overheated the diode removing it.

Right after I removed the mylar, I mounted the diode in a mini Aixiz housing and soldered a capacitor to it.

Then I hooked it up to the same LM317T circuit I use to power my labby........beautiful! Thanks Daedal..this is a very unique diode.

P.S. Any idea how much current it would take to run the red?
