Not bad at all for the price!

I found a lens that was able to correct the collimation to a fairly decent beam and dot.

I have a steady 28mW's after my correction lens with the front 'pickoff' lens removed... (it was 11mW's before removing the pickoff lens)

Jayrob, what correction lens did you use?
 
I bought one from Laser Ben too and mine sucked. Mode-hopped like crazy during warmup (no problem there, lots of blue DPSS do) but it would stabilize at some wierd TEM02-03 output.. it did make it's rated power, though. These are pulled from old medical equpment and they do not all work properly. It's a gamble unless the selller tests them first and guarantees full functionality and beam quality.

Jayrob, what correction lens did you use?

I don't know what the correction lens is called. I had a bunch of optics from this kit:

I can describe it though...

It is about 1/2" in diameter. And you can see that it is a two element lens.

It looks like this:

Hey guys - yeah it's definitely one of the BW TEK lasers that were originally for sale at $75 each. Ben bought a shitload of them and went around reselling them for a lot more. I managed to grab three from the seller before they were all gone.

The systems were fiber coupled in their original system so they do not have a collimation system, just the raw output of the crystals. (high divergence, tiny beam diameter)

I corrected the output of mine by creating a DIY beam expander (short focal lengh lens + longer focal length lens). Mine are all very solid TEM00 although most have some kind of extra light from the cavity (sort of like splatter from a diode laser). They are regulated to about 10mW with the optical sensor but on the one that I removed it now runs around 30mW.

Hey MM, do you know what that optical sensor is for? And if it is something that can harm the laser by removing it?

P.S. Mine had some 'splater' too, until I cleaned the IR filter. Which is hidden between the box and the round aluminum disc at the front...

The optical sensor is just for APC (active power control), it holds the output power constant by regulating the power to the pump diode. Removing it just runs the laser diode at full power. Shouldn't be a major issue as far as lifetime is concerned (although with any increase of current you will get some reduction in lifetime)

It's just like the photodiode in an argon, it measures the output and adjusts things to keep it stable at 10-12mW, but removing it allows it to go to full current, which does shorten the life by a few hundred hours, but before you freak out, think about this: average life for a laser is around 10,000 hours, and these are used, so let's be generous and say it's got 8,000 hours left on it, even with the sensor removed it's got over 7,000 hours on it, and that's quite a bit, it takes 168 hours to make seven days, so you've got 41.666 straight weeks of using the laser non stop, I think it's worth it. :D

To Jay-E-F, Mario and Proto THANKS for all those replies-- where else can that kind of info be gotten so easily and quickly-- gotta love that about LPF-:D-Group Hug??? you guys surely made it easier for an informed choice on bidding on this laser. Not in my budget this month.:cryyy:..

You can buy a cheap $10 green laser pointer, and remove the collimation set from it, and install in these to make a more usable beam.
