Best red diode?

Since I got here I only got into the Bluray diodes.

Now I would like to know about the red ones. A good place to buy one would be nice.

I was hoping to get one that can do around 400mws.

If the best ones come from DVD burners then let me know which one. :thanks:
 





I've got to say I'm in a similar situation than yours. I know all the basic about BR diodes, but not much about reds.

Anyway, as far as I know the best you can get are LOCs (Long Open Can Diode) from 22x DVD burners which at 420mA give around 240mW. You can push it to almost 300mW but it's kinda risky.

I recomend you to just buy a dilda from O-like.

Eh I already got the dilda 3-4 months ago. I wanted to get at least 400mws to see a beam without the aid of smoke. I also wanted it for my star trek model I'm working on and off.
 
So far, nothing has rivaled the long open can reds which are now commonly found in the LPC-815 sleds. (for 5.6mm DVD burner diodes)

At 420mA's, with a normal efficiency diode, you can expect:

* 245mW's (AixiZ acrylic - back opened)
* Multiply 245mW's by about 5% using AixiZ glass
* Multiply 245mW's by 10 % using AR coated acrylic from Virtual Village
* Multiply 245mW's by 20% using Meredith glass (optimized for red lens - now discontinued. I only have a couple left)
* Multiply 245mW's by 15% using 405-G-1 glass lens

I'm going to soon have a 650-G-1 glass lens mod available that will be as good or better than the discontinued Meredith glass lenses. (Meredith only has their new broadband lenses now)

Dave and Igor have some builds that have the long closed cans at higher current. Still waiting to find out if these higher currents will have any longevity though...

I'm now just working on getting some pricing. One of the companies was too high. I'm trying to get pricing on the bare lenses so that I can do the modified AixiZ mount for the same (or maybe even less) price as I am currently doing the Meredith lenses for...

There have been a few threads regarding this question. The 24x drives use improved optics to reach the higher burning speeds.

Not known yet...

The long closed can diode that comes in the GGW 6X sleds (and GBW 4X) have proved to be very similar in power to the LOC diodes.

But Dave and Igor both are testing these diodes at 500mA's!

I'm sure at that current, the power will be over 350mW's with a Meredith glass lens. But we do not know how the longevity is at that power. See this post by Dave: (he did not mention the power reading, but if we know what reading and what lens used, we can easily figure out the Meredith multiplication)

yep, DVD burning diodes are stuck on the LOC diodes, and I suspect this isn't going to change. the new storage is bluray, that's why we are seeing the 8x diodes getting close to your red dream :D

Uh Yeah heard you the first time there bud but you have to admit that a visible bright red beam coming out of a space ship would look really cool.

Thanks for the link Jay. They are sold out. But I did find them at hightechdealz. Since they are so cheap I might over power them myself just to see. But to help the forum I would still need an LPM. I guess the laserbee one is ideal. I'd rather buy a used one. I might start a thread asking if anyone has one to sell.
 
I once pushed a long open can at 586mA's to see what power it would give with a Meredith glass lens in my 'Ice Box' TEC build. It gave 365mW's. (the efficiency drops a lot because it is well past the 'knee' in the graph slope. And not expected to last long at that power)

You mean the match light? No... the match light was at normal build current... I can repeat that with a Pocket Mini red!

In fact, the 20' match light was only at 416mA's and using a Meredith acrylic lens. (close to the same power as an AixiZ acrylic for red)

Just took the time to get the focus just perfect. (not easy at that distance)
