Hey Gazoo, I went to Newegg.com to buy more 112D's and it looks like they don't sell them anymore:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=Suggested&Description=27-129
I put an open can diode in an MXDL with heatsink @ 323mA. Fried it. I think because I was turning it on and off too quick when I was adjusting for long focus. I'm putting my other extra one back in the MXDL and want to buy a couple more just for stock because I really like these diodes! It looks like they have 212D or 115D. Which one do you think I should try?
Jay

I noticed that a few days ago and meant to post it. I was also wondering which one would be the best candidate. ;)

Re: Open Can with TEC

Well now that is interesting. My guess would be the 115D. The 212 is the same thing except it is a SATA drive. No need to spend the extra money for it. Hopefully they use the same type of diode and not one of those weird things..

I did find the 112D here for about the same price as Newegg had it:

http://www.axiontech.com/prdt.php?item=78470

I have always believed all open can diodes were the same no matter which drive they came from. Maybe after the holidays I will order a 115D and check it out. One way to tell will be to measure the voltage vs current of the diodes. If there is a big enough difference, then the diodes are different. But I am guessing the 115D uses the same diode as the 112D.

Hmmm...the description says 20x burner instead of 18?? I wonder if that means a more powerful diode? Might have to try it huh?

Re: Open Can with TEC

I just harvested a nice open can from a Memorex MRX-530L 20x burner. It's a good one! ;)

It was difficult to remove from its heatsink though. :-/

Hey the Infrared Thermometer came today and I think I like what I see so far! Before I turned on the Ice Box, I checked the ambient temperature of the box and it was 74 degrees. Now for these initial readings, I only left it on for about 1 1/2 minutes. The LM317s little mini heatsinks got up to over 100 degrees:

I checked the outside of the case kind of low...by the peltier heatsink and got a reading of 78.5 degrees...
open can temp 2.jpg

As I was monitoring the module, (I checked this several times during the test run) the temperature stayed around 72 or 73 degrees.

The current settings for these initial temperature readings were:
416mA to the LD
516mA to the peltier
Seems to be pretty 'dialed in' at these initial settings! But I will push it when I get my Laser Power Meter!...

Looks good Jay. I ordered a meter from Sears when it was on sale but I am still waiting for it. I have to pick it up in the store when they get it, but I sure am looking forward to it. I got it for $43.00 with all the discounts so I guess the wait will be worth it.

http://www.sears.com/shc/s/ProductD...9000P&langId=-1&storeId=10153&catalogId=12605

Excellent price on that! I got mine at e-bay for less than 50 bucks...plus shipping so, about 60 bucks.

But that is a DMM as well huh? Nice...

Yup, it's pretty neat. Having a way to measure temperature will almost be as nice and having a way to measure power. Plus I need a decent DMM. It was a one day sale and another member alerted me to it..I got it just in time so I was lucky.

Daedal received the LPM's today so you will have yours soon and I will be looking forward to your measurements.. :)

now just swap out the diode in you thermometer. might give you bad readings though ;)

Re: Open Can with TEC

Try putting some black electrical tape on the items you are measuring (and let it come up to temperature). The emissivity of different material finishes yield significantly different results. Bare metals will read low. Interestingly, many of the IR cameras are calibrated to read accurately for black electrical tape. BTW, nice job on your project.

Re: Open Can with TEC

Thanks for that tip Paul, I will definitely use the black tape when the real testing begins! Do you think that black tape on top of the red block is good enough for the module temp.? Or, should I try to wrap some tape around the focusing tip of the module?

Re: Open Can with TEC

You can try testing it. Unplug and set the whole assembly aside to let it reach a stable temperature. Check the temperature at various surfaces to see if your meter reads the same for various surfaces. You can also do this with the raw materials instead of your assembly - it may be easier to get cleaner readings.

See the thread below. Note especially post #5.

Re: Open Can with TEC

Now I am getting jealous...  I think I best get busy on mine.

Hey Gazoo, I tried to light a match today at 30' and it smoked more and more...I thought it was going to light, but after 20 seconds I gave up. Still waiting on the Laser Power Meter. I went back to 20' and it lit in less than 3 seconds! (see video near bottom of this page) Man, I don't think I could expect much better. In fact, I am going to mount a different Pioneer 112D open can diode in a Meredith 5.6mm adapter so that when I do the testing with the meter and push it, I won't take the chance of frying this 1st LD! I mean, a 20' match light in less than 3 seconds? This is better than I expected. Could I expect more?...

Re: Open Can with TEC

We need to find a source for these open cans. I got one from a 20x DVD burner running at >300ma and it is amazing! ~300ma is all my Dorcy mini will give it and it just keeps on going strong! ;D

I know what you mean! The open can diodes seem to be putting out much more power per mA's supplied. Here's my MXDL with custom machined heatsink fit with an open can diode running at 324mA...
open can MXDL.jpg

When I get my Laser Power Meter from DDL's GB, I have a lot of comparisons to do with how much mW of power I can get using different lenses, diodes, current...
laser collection.jpg

Should make for some interesting stuff...Of course, the one I am most interested in, is my latest 'Ice Box', and the effect of the TEC!
