Best introduction wavelength for "other" colored lasers?

I was wondering what diodes I should look at as an introduction to the "other" laser colors (not 405,445,532, etc.).

I was looking at some of the offerings and they are very expensive. A yellow laser started at like $600, cyan lasers were more reasonable.

Are there other wavelengths I should look at? I don't need a burner, but I would like to be able to see the beam.
 





Exotic wavelengths are not high powered at all. A 473 may be one of your better options at around 100mw. But these are also very expensive. These " other" colors as you call them are " other for a good reason. But good luck. Prepare to open up that wallet!!
 
473nm and the 520nm diodes are a good start IMO. :)

Yellow lasers can be touchy and/or expensive.
 
I will second 473nm, its my favorite (readily available) wavelength :)

Though ideally I would probably like 480-485nm best
 
If you have a 532 and care to see the color difference between that and 520, click the link in my signature. 520 is a wonderful color, kinda minty/foresty green :)
 
I second the 473nm idea, it's a lovely color. I haven't seen 520nm, only 514nm from my argon :p and our perception changes based on relative color so I can't really say how 515nm or 520nm looks :p but good luck!

Might want to add 908nm to your DPSS wavelength chart :beer:
 
easiest for you pocket would be 635 - I'd get single mode instead of higher power though. After that would be 520 and then 473.
 
It's pretty boring, but my "gateway wavelength" was 632.8nm - it quickly led to owning 543.5nm and 694.1nm lasers.

But in terms of something that's really new and different, you can't beat reasonably priced 473nm DPSS. :)

This is very visible wavelength. green yellow laser pointer at 561nm, green laser pointer pen
More visible than 532nm.

That pointer last time I checked it went for 600$. I don't know how old you are but if you are old enough you'll remember 5mw green pointers went for 450$ back around 1999 even more before that. One price I heard quoted was 2000$. I remember the first red 670nm laser pointer I saw retailed for 200$. Now you can buy them in dollar stores. Nowadays we're too spoiled by relatively cheap lasers.
