beam expander inside an olike laser?

I basically told them after another email that if they can ship me out a new laser now with better packaging then ill accept partial refund on the shipping cost. Which still REALLY annoys me. Also I made them aware with the first email I sent them about purchasing the laser that I was part of the LPF and couldnt wait to review the laser. Guess they didnt care. Next time I buy from over seas it will have to be from Lazerer.com, I hear RayFoss has kinda gone down hill too.

When will these laser companies realize they will actually make more money if they offer good business practices rather than trying to save money by trying to claim the laser never showed up when it did...

Do they not realize how many people are here reading on LPF and what they are doing to their reputation! :tsk:

I haven't had any problems with o-like, ordering since then, aside from them taking a good long while to ship the laser out.

I do agree 100% though, that many chinese companies just don't get "customer service" and that many people are willing to spend more, to get it.

I recently had a problem with my jetlasers TiB. You know how much I spent on shipping? $9. That was it. Sent a picture to Gray and Len, sent the laser to Len, and that was it. No fuss, no back, and forth arguing, and I now have what could be the very last TiB ever made, and it's also nicely overspec.

They way the problem was handled, leads me to always say that jetlasers is by far the best chinese laser company out there. Both in terms of quality, and in terms of service.

Lazerer has also been very pleasant to deal with, and whenever I pointed out a problem to Max, he was already aware of it, or dealt with it. This again lets me recommend the company with confidence.

I think it's a matter of a different mindset. Chinese companies seem much more driven by one time transactions, whereas western/european companies tend to promote and develop a returning customer base.
 

Oh, that is interesting ! I guess the design is not exclusive to O-like.

Actually, the beam expanding lens on the one I received looks slightly different than the pictures on the O-like website and on Lazerpoint. On mine the actual lens is not as large looking as the photos, although the beam is just as wide as it is quoted in the specs on the website.

I will have to take some pictures so you can see the slight difference in the appearance of the lens.

Susie also mentioned part of the delay in the shipping of mine was due to "problems with the torch" although she did not elaborate any more than that. I wonder if they had to do some kind of modification to the initial lens design, I am not actually sure...

Edit: Infinitus, Jetlasers does sound like a really good company as well, that is good you mentioned them. Do you know if Jetlasers guarantees arrival of the order as some of the better companies do?

Well part of the potential range I guess is due to the power of the laser, and part due to the divergence. While not exceptionally powerful at 100mW, the divergence is quoted in the specs to be less than 1 mrad.

I would like to take some measurements and I know I am being a little over cautious, but I think I would like to wait until I have IR absorbing dual protection goggles before I go looking at the dot at close range to take measurements with the ruler. I'm sorry if there are people that would like to know the actual divergence, I am just a little new to taking the measurements and don't usually use any higher powered lasers indoors unless I have the appropriate goggles since the laser is not IR filtered.

I know I am being overly cautious so I apologize to you guys who might be curious about knowing the nitty gritty details of the specs...:o

I'll take some pics tonight, they might not be that great but hopefully it will give a rough idea of what the laser looks like and how the beam is different than a regular non beam expanded 532nm

well ir expands pretty fast so if you measured it at a decent distance you should be fine...having said that tho im not gonna force you to do something you are uncomfortable with ..your eyes are important lol,,,and you only get 2...
 
I know Infinitus was thinking I was being overly cautious and I know he's right that I probably am going a bit overboard, but since IR expands at a greater rate (higher divergence than the green) I remember reading that you have to be aware of the larger beam area of the IR that you cannot see.

That's why I kind of picture me measuring the green dot up close of the thin green beam of 532nm but not being aware that my face is actually within the larger invisible cone shaped beam of IR....

If IR can be 60% of the actual total mW power of a green laser and I have not been able to LPM it and test for IR content, I'm still kind of wary dealing with the dot close range indoors without knowing the actual IR content. I know that O-like guarantees the power to be within a certain percentage range of the quoted specs, but probably like a lot of the laser companies that sell non IR filtered lasers, technically it would be on spec according to them if it were 50mW IR and 40mW 532nm...

It appears like it is as bright as a non beam expanded 100mW 532nm but I really do not know unless I LPM it. I guess I really should get a Laserbee at some point when I can afford one. I know it would be a really great tool to have and also quite reassuring to know the actual IR content to ease any potential concern.

I actually purchased an IR filter but as Susie said it does not fit on the beam expanded 100mW 532nm unfortunately...

Idk if Jetlasers actually guarantees delivery, but I do know to date they haven't had any problems where a laser wasn't delivered.

Ask Gray via PM.... he would know.

I took a few pictures of the beam expanded 100mW 532nm o-like but I probably will wait to do a review on it until I can take some better pictures.


Here is what the beam looks like from about 4 feet away. You can see that the beam looks thick from that distance and is approximately .750 to 1 cm wide. I set the camera to 15 seconds on the automatic starry sky setting but only had the laser on for about 5 seconds. I need to learn the best manual settings on the camera but the way it appears here is just ever so slightly brighter than it looks in actuality.





Here is what the beam expanding lens looks like on the front of the laser. You can see that it looks slightly different than the picture on O-like's website.

Hmm. Aesthetically what is pictured on o-like is nicer imo.

Hard to really perceive any significant difference vs other green lasers from the picture.

Can't wait to see a more detailed review... one picture to add to it, would be a side by side with another 532nm laser to showcase the difference.

I'm sorry the pics aren't the greatest. I'm a bit of an amateur at the moment in regards to taking laser pics, and it is a bit harder as well because I live in a somewhat busy area so I can't really shine it outdoors for too long of a period of time while I fiddle with the camera like a noob photographer trying to get a proper exposure :o

In the picture above if you imagine that the camera is about 4 to 5 feet away it is easier to visualize that the beam is wider since if it were a regular green laser it would be much more of a pinpoint beam viewing from 4 to 5 feet away. If the camera was right beside the beam of a regular 532nm I can see how it might look larger as well like that and it would be harder to see much of a difference. I agree that it is hard to tell the beam width since there is no nearby objects to compare the size to but if you imagine yourself about 5 feet away which was how far away the camera was it should probably look a bit wider than a regular beam viewing from that distance.


Also I probably need to find a way to set the lasers up on a tripod or something so I don't have to try and hold them still and takes pics with my other hand. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get a regular 532nm with a hold down push button on at the same time as the O-like beam expanded to compare beam size sided by side. The problem is when I hold them in my hand and allow the camera an extended exposure to best represent the actual brightness of the beam I inadvertently move it ever so slightly so the beams look much thicker and out of whack then they should... It's kind of hard doing all this without a helper. :p

Probably the best bet is for me to get some 532nm /IR goggles ASAP so I can play around more indoors where I can set the lasers horizontally on a table and have more time to get really nice shots without having to worry about the trouble of having to be extra cautious outdoors as to where I am pointing them while I try and get pictures without attracting too much attention. :wave:

I am jealous of those that live out in the boonies and can shine their lasers freely without having to worry about the neighbors! :beer::beer: :D

I'll try again tonight though just in case I can manage to get something a little better in pictures... I'll see if I can get set up to show both beams side by side to make it easier to compare them.

if its a pen style ebay like one than you can simply use a rubber band or some tape to hold the button down...even use something heavy like a shoe and sit it on the laser on the button...but it would be stationary... and do you have a backyard? if the light doesn't leave your property your neighbors cant say crap about you shining them...
 
I have a really small backyard so the distance within the yard is too short for the laser dot not to be too bright too look at. There are some distant trees a few houses down that I can shine at or I can shine straight up in the sky as well. The trouble is just finding a safe way to hold the lasers in the correct position where they will not fall and point in a dangerous direction.

Thanks for the suggestion though, I actually haven't tried using the tape or rubber bands, I'm sure that would really help!

If I could convince one of my friends to help me in my laser photography experiments it would be great too!! ;)

Electro: You should look into getting a tripod and clamp. You can set it up to point where you want with little chance of it moving and the clamp can hold the momentary button in too.
