bad idea to point lasers out of moving car?

There have been a few times when I have come across an opportunity to use my lasers while riding in a car. However, I'm starting to wonder if this is a bad idea. In other words, what are the chances of hitting another car or person by accident?

In any case, I would use my laser in a car only if these conditions are met:

1. The road is smooth enough (i.e., not bumpy).
2. There are no other lanes on my side of the car.
3. The car is moving at a slow speed, when in a city.
4. I only aim the laser at an adequately large angle above the horizontal.

Are these safety measures sufficient, or is it generally a bad idea to aim lasers out of a moving car?

Well, if a cop saw you, even if the only risk was flash-blinding shrubs and trees, he'd probably pull you over just because it's something out of the ordinary.

Out here, we have single lane dirt roads in farm country; I'd see little risk in that, but you're still attracting attention... (Who knows if some farmer may think an alien has landed.)

As with any situation with lasers, I don't think it's a matter of "is this OK or not" - so much as, common sense, and even if common sense -is- exercised, will someone give you trouble just because you're doing something out of the ordinary.

I've had a lot of trouble with photography, actually, lately: taking pictures of things that are perfectly legal (parks, architecture) where a 'second tier authority' will tell me I "can't take pictures of that". (Completely false.)

While the (usual rent-a) 'authority' is *usually* wrong, often its not worth it to get into the frey with them. You'd probably win in the long run, but they can certainly ruin your day. Even if you were doing nothing wrong in the end.

That said, I've got 5 acres of land in Costilla County that I hereby declare as a "LPF OK Zone" if anyone wants to do long-distance beamshots in a flat field backed by mountains. :)

The questions is, what are you exactly trying to do with a laser inside a car?
 
Some weapons have lasers on them-all law enforcement is well aware of this. You are asking for trouble. Cell phones being everywhere are being used to report everything, so I would think it may not be such a good idea. I agree with photoalc.'It's ALWAYS a bad idea to draw attention to ourselves and our lasers.... ' BAD IDEA

Stupid idea. If you hit something like a road sign, it could reflect back into the drivers eyes, which will flash blind them and possibly cause your car to end up up a tree.

You are unsure about the safty about something that concerns your laser-usage. That should ring a bell in your head, NOT to do anything.

Don't use lasers from a car. Did you even consider the fact that you'd probably have to shine it through your windows if you didn't want to hold it outside your car?

Now THAT's a silly thing to be doing...
 
We have a Croatian saying ...
"Don't pull the devils tail..."

Which is usually followed up with
"If devil has kids, it has A LOT of them"

Meaning: don't ask for trouble, cause once you get it, there is hellova crap following it.

Hope everyone gets my point.

OP, can't you simply use your lasers in backyard out in night sky? When you know you ain't gonna hit an oncoming car, or maybe a person looking through the window in the building next to the road you are driving.

During family road trips, there have been a few times when we drive near snow-covered mountains. It's always so tempting to point a laser at them!
 
I think the chief danger with using lasers while driving is other traffic - you could stratle some oncoming driver, and you could be unlucky enough to end up in a head on crash.

You dont actually have to hit someone in the eye to cause a situation like that... the other driver might just be very curious about the beam and not pay attention to the road because of the distraction. Or some reflection in the windows and/or mirrors might interfere with the one driving your car, resulting in similar danger.

Just be darn careful, sometimes something perfectly safe in your mind can end up very nasty.

I believe Hindu's worship cows...or at least they're sacred to them.

I've done this before. Honestly it's just a matter of common sense. If there are other cars or people around DON'T DO IT. On the other hand if you're driving down some lonely country road or highway at night it couldn't hurt. Btw this is assuming that you're the passenger. Trying to aim a laser out the window WHILE driving is probably one of the dumbest things you can do.
