Australia Laser Imports

If you didn't know, I live in Australia, so how would you expect me to get it in to the country.

Take the risk. No one can tell you if it'll get through or not, there are too many variables.

Also, AU customs are now metering laser pointers (modules are still fine), so if they get yours and it's 1.5mw, it's theirs...

I'm pretty sure you can't get ANY laser over 1mw in AUS, thats what the new laws state and even a 5mw will be taken. I recently lost my 50mw green for dx by customs.

Sorry Alexie, that is incorrect! i can EASILY and LEGALLY get a 50 watt mains power laser through customs if i wanted to! The law sates that all "handheld laser devices, such as laser pointers or high power hand held laser devices over 1mw are prohibited to be imported or used in a public forum". this does not include laser parts, repairs, lasers modules, diodes or any other "laser part". hope that clears it up for every one!

Also as Things said, customs are now checking all "suspisous" lasers that they think might be over 1mw, if so they take it! As far as i know if it is your first incident you get a warning in the mail, saying that if you want the laser bak you must buy/get a firearms permit, inorder to legally import this laser, or you can have them destroy it! im not to sure what happens after your second attempt but i dont think it will be to pretty :(

Hope that helps -Adrian

Yes, thanks but I already know that it is only laser pointers that are illegall and not parts. I have recently bought a 100mw bluray from olike and they are disasembling it and sending in two packages...Hopefully works. ill tell you wheni get it. But i dont know how to post new stuff, lol.

Hello there, long time laser addict and lurker, first time poster.

I'm in Aus and I bought a PHR-803T module from ModWerx. It arrived without issue. The customs note said "dvd laser assembly".

I must agree that ordering the parts is orders of magnitude less risky than ordering assembled pointers.

Plus you get the fun of building it yourself! :)

no offense but its been established many times that modules get through fine. lol ive had about 15 get through

Hey guys i have had a DX 30 mw taken by Au customs. recieved a nasty letter saying i'm breaking the law etc etc.....

Attention to all from oz.... import modules and diodes!!!! NO PROBLEMS AT ALL!!!!

It is amazing at what can go past customs sometimes!!?!!

Hey Jamest.. could you upload a scanned image of the letter.. just curious as to what they actually say! was there any other warnings that were in the letters.. like what would happn if you do it again?

I've got a friend in Melbourne, Aus who is wanting to buy my CNI 150 from me.

Do customs check all packages or just packages from companies, if I sent it and labelled it as something random would it be likely to get through?

Thanks for your help guys

where are you from.. if its out side of Aus.. then its hit and miss.. better it be sent in two packages and declared as flash light or something like that! but dont take my word for it.. theres probably more that must be considered.

-Adrian

I'm from the UK, the problem is that I can't take the laser apart easily so sending it in two packages would be difficult.

If i put it inside the WL Dragon case and declared it as a cigar case would that be a good idea?

lol im not going to say yes or no.. but like i said its kinda hit and miss.. the best person to talk to about exporting lasers to Austalia is scopeguy20.. he might be able to help you out! I live in Australia and have successfully recieved laser modules, diodes ect.. so try talking to scopeguy20 and see what he can do 4 ya!

-Adrian

I wouldn't sent the laser as a whole unit either.... not really worth the risk of losing it.

See if you can take it apart, even if you have to cut wires, soldering is easy.

I'll see if i can find my customs letter.
