At under $3, what the hell

Wow that's pretty craptastic lol. They must be the ones that failed the "turn on" test somewhere :D

I actually think the very dim ones are the most dangerous as they're all pumping out ~80mW of IR. Scenario: you order one, you push the button and get a very faint green dot, you don't know how dpss lasers work and you look right into the barrel and get 80mW of IR straight to the retina.

Bad. Quite bad.

i know but at that point i would think the raw materials would be more expensive, don't you? i think ill get some and see how they do, even though i don't have a meter.

Considering the price i'd say its a fair deal, apart from the serious IR leakage:

Unit # mW 532 mW IR 808+1064
1 19.06 31.66
2 12.71 61.21
3 16.94 38.54
4 9.81 55.86
5 14.87 41.07
6 6.76 59.24
7 9.26 49.22
8 13.44 39.62
9 16.32 30.47
10 30.14 24.46
11 0.21 70.58
12 1.13 80.63
13 0.63 81.57
14 0.86 85.67
15 0.08 88.68
16 2.06 76.52
17 1.68 80.11
18 0.69 81.26
19 1.12 61.62
20 nada, 87.62

8 out the 20 produced at (a rounded) 10 mW or more, with the ones producing more green light leaking less IR. Since its 808 and 1064 combined on the IR here i cannot say for certain what the problem is: drive wavelength mismatch or doubler efficiency.

Then again, if you were to measure and bin these things, out of 20 for $60 you would get 8 units that are over 10 mW. Binning the other 12, that'd be $7 a pop for a 10mW(+) 532 - not too bad if you have the time to test them one by one ;)

^but why bother when you can get overspec pens for 3$ a piece that aren't 10mw green and 80mW ir?
