Anyone know about really old school radios??

My brother picked up this REALLY cool old radio today. It's an all-tube amplifier and the thing is just neat as hell!

It's in OK shape cosmetically, and definitely needs a good re-wiring. The wires are insulated with asbestos  

Anyway, I got a bunch of pictures that I'm going to post up in a few hours so hopefully those can help identify it. I was just wondering if anyone around here is into those old tube radios so we might be able to get some more information on it. I'm on my way to bed right now but I'll get those pictures up in a few hours

I guess this is a combination of AM and short wave radio... it has presets for police stations across the country ;D

I'm not sure why you're saying it needs to be rewired - for something as old as it is the insulation looks pretty decent - all you should really need is some electrical contact cleaner and a damp cloth to scrub the nasty dust off

also there may be dead tubes so you'd have to check for that if you can't get it to power up

I've got an old philco of similar vintage, and it also has the ability to pick up various different kinds of radio frequencies. Check the power cord for cracks and exposed wires, see if it has a place to hook up an antenna (I just used a piece of wire) (if not it might have one integrated somewhere), plug it in, cross your fingers and turn it on!

anyone have any idea on what era this thing is from? I cant find a date on it anywhere... My guess right now is anywhere from early 40's to the 60s... I really have no clue!!

id say early 40s, looks like an old tranny style radio to me, My dad also says 40s, he had one like that when he was a boy in the 60s and then it was about 20 years old he said

You'll probably have to replace the capacitors - those old paper-cased ones tend to dry up over the years.

If you haven't plugged it in yet - check the caps before you do.
