Any Nexus 5 Owners? Thoughts/Opinions?

Hey everyone,

I have as of late wanted to throw my Samsung Galaxy S4 out of my car window pretty much every day due to its extremely cheap feel and obnoxious touchwiz overlay. As the phone's screen recently cracked(not on purpose), and I do not think it is worth the 80 dollars to fix it, I am considering buying a new phone out of contract.

I was originally considering the HTC One M8 or the Sony Xperia Z2(when it comes out ~May), however I found out that the Nexus 5 could be had brand new for half the cost of the other devices. Indeed, to buy a used HTC would cost nearly as much as a new Nexus. The stock Android experience and lack of shitty looking glossy plastic is highly appealing to me and the price point even more so.

So, have any of you owned the Nexus 5? What are your thoughts on it? I am aware of the somewhat underwhelming battery life, but am not worried. I will be purchasing a Tablet soon which will take on many of my processes. Add to that the Nexus' ability to charge wirelessly, and the worry eases from my mind.

I want opinions because the last time I bought a phone, I ended up with my S4. Verily, a more cheap feeling piece of shite phone has ne'er graced my hands. I do, however, plan to hold onto the S4 and possibly make a project out of it. Changing the back panel to a metal one would provide a high increase in the feel of the device, and possibly altering the OS to be more tablet-esque(given my intention of removing my SIM card) should result in a decent small tablet I could use for doodling, watching movies(via wifi), or turning into a dedicated music player. I have also heard of apps that would let me use it as a desktop mouse.

Thanks,
Isaac

I recently got a new phone, I was seriously considering a Nexus 5. The only bad things I found in reviews is spotty battery, on screen buttons (may be a pro for some?) and no expandable storage.

Spotty battery was the only thing that made me look somewhere else, but both my friends have it and they like it.

Apparently it will generally last you a full day, although early reviews back in late 2013 didn't get as good of a battery life it is apparently now better. Apparently. I have a hard time trusting every review I see but I figure if I see enough of them I can craft the truth from the average. Maybe. Lol.

I will be getting the 32GB most likely, since there is no expandable memory. Although I really don't want to drop 400 dollars on a phone right now, if I can sell my S4 it won't be as big of an expenditure. We'll see how that works. Personally I don't even inquire people about phones with broken screens so who would I expect to contact me about mine?

I don't own one but have used one many times and it has been a great pleasure, the screen and it's resolution is stunning, and whether you use it or not, google now is way ahead of every other virtual assistant. Some of my friends own one and they are really happy with it. If you haven't already you should watch MKBHD's review of it on YouTube.

In my opinion (and I think, in everyone else's), it is the best value phone out there.

I was seriously considering it when I was shopping for a new phone last month. I really liked what I saw when I test drove it in the store. In the end I decided to go with a cheap, normal, non-smartphone (dumbphone?). Reason being I usually only use the smart features when I'm at home or on Wifi, and I tend to break, lose, get wet, small electronics. So a $50 phone being busted is a lot better than a $500 one. Plus I'm a lower target for robbers.

With the saved money I'm going to buy a Nexus 7 tablet.

I had a S4 and I replaced it with the Nexus 5 about 4 months ago.

The battery is not as good as the S4's. But , The Open Android experience is worth it. It just feels much better. And on everyday basis it is easier to control.

Also , the Nexus 5 Screen is showing much lower temperature colors than the S4. A lot of people that had the Samsung did not like it. However , I think it is much better this way. The colors just look better and more "real" in my opinion.

About the wireless charging ... it is really un-useful. It charges really slow compared to the standard usb charging.

The S4 charger is much faster than other chargers. I think it is charging at 2A ... The nexus 5's charger is charging at 1A. So when I actually moved from the S4 to the Nexus it felt a bit slow suddenly.

Also , the camera is the S4 is better. I got a DSLR camera so I do not really use my phone camera. But it is another thing to consider when you buy the Nexus.

After all , it is a very good phone for the price. The Android ( user experience ) on this phone is worth it ...

One thing i always worry about, especially with low amp-hour batteries, is charge cycles and how a night plugged in affects it. I imagine a slower charger will be healthier for the lower capacity battery, although that could just be superstition.

I hate my S4. A lot. So any changes are welcome in my book. And the camera doesnt worry me. Like you, i have my DSLR to fall back on.

PS-Black or white?

Hi, I own a Nexus 5. The phone has nice specs, works perfectly well. I rooted it as soon as I got it but I kept it stock, and I never had problems. I've noticed only two little cons: the camera hasn't an excellent quality, and the audio volume from the internal speaker isn't very loud. But since I neither take photos very often, nor I listen to the music using the internal speaker, there two things don't bother me. The battery life lasts about 12 hours of normal usage.
Thanks to the Gorilla Glass 3 although I never used any screen protector, and although my phone fall off many times, the screen glass is perfect. Really, you can't find any line.

Overall I think it's a nice phone with nice specs, even if it's not the best existing phone. The price is really low compared to the specs of the device.

I am pretty much set on it, just gotta commit to the purchase. Any ideas for what I should do with my S4? I went ahead and made a craigslist listing but any thoughts would be welcome.

Well, the Nexus 5 has been ordered in black at 32gb storage.

Even better, I have lined up a sale of my crippled Galaxy S4(broken screen) for 220 dollars today. I may be without a phone for 3 days or so but I am pleased with the outcomes here. Buh bye crappy S4. I will not miss you in the slightest.

Were you running stock with bloat on the S4? I have for the most part enjoyed this phone but I have had a custom rom on it the whole time.:)

Running stock with touchwiz. I have aldo run nova launcher though.

Yea first thing I did when I got it was root and put a bloat free Wicked rom on it. Has ran great ever since. I only ask as I hear stock with bloat could be less responsive.:)

You probably paid a little too much for that one and I bet it is underspec :p

lol I kid. Anyway, yeah I just hated the build quality and the bloatware. The aerotech plastic on the back is all well and good for durability but it feels like a crackerjack prize to be honest. Just couldn't stand it.
