I have never seen anyone using a high powered laser out in public and I'm wondering if I'm shining it up in the sky and water towers and the like will the cops show up and if they do can they confiscate my laser? I live in CO I'm sure if I call the police they'll tell me what I probably don't want to hear.
Anyone have experience dealing with the cops and lasers?

If you want to shine your laser outside, its best to use it only for short pulses, and MAKE SURE!!!!!!!!!! that you KNOW where the airplanes go in your area. I have a mountain behind my house, so its fairly safe for me, and if you live in a big open area, its even safer, but chances are the cops wont take nicely to you having a laser. Just be safe and responsible with it, and try to make sure it isnt going to attract the wrong kind of attention.

Don't do it in a crowd. Some people will freak out thinking it will make them go blind. I was at the Wild Animal Park and I was pointing my 25mW green laser at a large balloon that takes people up at night. They never knew it was me but they were all surprised it was green.

When I first showed it to my girlfriend she said "oh do you have different colored caps for it".... (head shake, sigh).

People who know nothing about lasers usually will think they are pointless and dangerous. My friend tells me to make him a laser that can blow up cars. You will attract the wrong kind of attention if you flash it around in from of people.

i always get fed up when people know nothing and make dumb remarks to me, like the ones you've mentioned.

The one that ticks me off most is when they get those little LED keychain lights, and I go "One day I wanna get a blue laser", and they go "Oh I have one" [/facepalm]

ask them if it can light a cigarette. ;)

Yea, I am annoyed with people who no NOTHING about lasers. One person Who I dont know very well asekd me to make a black laser!!!!!! Thats just stupid! Some else asked me to make them a pink laser... You would have to combian a red laser and a violet laser with one lense, and it would not be pink, it would just be purpaly red. Cos theres no pink in the spectrum!

What pisses me off is when they say lasers can give you cancer >:(
It makes me wanna beat the snot out of them...

Lasers gave me cancer of the wallet. They've eaten a hole right through the money that was in there ;)

one of my first red lasers from the early 90's had a solid lead tip :-/ I still have it somewhere in a box. I think it was putting out a bit more than 5mW though as the dot was clearly visible on the sidewalk outside during the day. I could write with the tip of the laser so it was either lead or graphite, I'm leaning towards lead though as the laser was very heavy for it's size

UV lasers (Such as some of the Metal Vapor lasers) can give you cancer if you shine it at your skin.

Ya, but not the lasers you usually see...
UV anything will give you cancer ::)

Usually I shine my high powered lasers out the window and off the balcony at like 2 in the morning when everybody is asleep. I wouldn't shine them around in a public crowded area. Those are my >$1,000 lasers though. With a cheap $25 ebayser it's no big deal if it gets confiscated.

im attracted some big crowds with just my simple 30mW greenie from DX.

never got the police called on me just because of shining it in the sky though
