Watch the first 50 seconds of the video.. note, this is a 1W green laser.

I commented...

Bobhaha:

That is the most idiotic way of handling a Class 4 laser. I don't care who you are, if you are going to handle a laser always practice safe usage. I will ship you out a pair of safety glasses if you make sure you wear them every time that laser is on!

Photonicinduction:
Awe, that's very nice offer, very good of you to be worried, but may be you could ship a few out to night clubs if you are that worried, the beam was not in a concentrated area, and class 4 sounds real nasty, indeed you would not want to get it in your eyes in a static beam, even 1w, but I know engineers who have gouged their eys with a screwdriver and done worse. when the 500w Co2 comes out I might consider H&S a bit more.

Bobhaha:

Thanks for the smart ass reply... I'm trying to help you. First of all that IS A STATIC BEAM... secondly nightclubs do not use 1W lasers... and thirdly the lasers are never static and pointing into the crowd. Since you are so intelligent... I'm sure you also know that green lasers also produce IR laser light, which is not emitted along the same beam as the green. Assuming that's a high quality green it should have an IR filter... but still you can do damage! Don't be stupid!

What are your thoughts?

Another idiot that owns and 1W laser (especially a green one) and doesnt have safety glasses ! The companys that sell these lasers should ask a picture of their customers safety glasses and then ship tha laser !!!

Judging from the vid he'll take himself out with his class 4 without harming any bystanders

That's nowhere near the most dangerous thing he's done. He's a lot smarter than you think he is, though.

You could argue that dangerous things shouldn't be done on camera (even for entertainment) because it encourages others to do them, but there are wheels out there far more squeaky.

That's true... but I was getting at the fact that he thought he was right despite me pulling him up about it. It is not safe to use a laser like that, and to see a youtube icon go blind because he was to proud to use proper safety is idiotic.

There is no such thing as "too much safety" You are in the right IMO. Besides, using a 1W laser on camera without goggles, and claiming it is safe, is encouraging others to do the same. ;)

Well, It is stationary, and he knows where it is. The beam is at least 20cm wide, and pupils are only a few mm wide. If it hit him in the eye, only a small percentage of that 1W would enter the eye. Maybe 20-40mW. It's arguably dangerous, but you're probably more likely to fall to your death in the shower.

Or how about touching the 240V mains later on in the film? That didn't strike anyone as dangerous? :D

Sure, for the noobs that don't have a clue what the deal with "grounding" is. I'd imagine his wooden floor attic is a pretty good insulator, which is why he survived, but I think he should have some sort of warning telling people how dangerous it actually is - isolating yourself from ground completely is not as simple as some noobs may think.

He just responded to my last comment....

No, that was a line, if you calculate the energy within the given area of the line you will find the energy is dramatically weakened, night clubs use multi watt lasers and they do often go into the crowd!

Please don't get excited by a laser, my real razor would do more damage if I inadvertently stuck that in my eye. H&S gets right on my tits!
