What...

It doesnt mather if the police gets you or not, the whole point of this is simply that its not right to do. Go shine your friend in the eye, and ask him if it was ok, and if you can do it in his remaining eye too.

And I know that you know that Benm, just to others who might wonder why not to shine on airplanes. :p

trust me. there will be some ways to catch them. the police are very smart people. only if they really can't find the culprit will they give up on the case. you might like to watch this video.

Well, the video ends with them NOT being caught, so it proves my point more than yours ;)

As to how smart and agressive police are in pursuing these things depends on country i guess. Here in holland police arent generally that smart (lousy pay, smart people get better jobs), not that motivated to pursue a case without an actual victim.

Problem is that politicians might act on these stunts and go out and ban laser pointers, which wouldn't be a very nice thing. I think selling anything over 1 mW as a pointer to the general public is already forbidden, but so far noone seems to care much... which could change with an actual accident. [/quote]
i was just trying to show what'd happen if it's not possible to catch them. i don't need to prove anything. :-/

The danger isn't so much in the 'remaining eye', i'm sure its quite safe in that respect from such distances. But it could startle a pilot (or car driver for that matter) resulting in accidents, which remains a true danger.

So i would by no means advise anyone to shine at planes on purpose, but i would say the chance of actually getting in trouble might be limited if you just point a laser skywards and accidentally hit an overhead airliner.

To those who ask "how they gonna know who did it?":

Give it a try and find out - you'll get caught, you'll go to jail, and you'll find out first hand what a serious matter this is.
Your question will be answered.

As a bonus, you'll no longer be around to bother the general populace with dumb ideas like pointing lasers at aircraft.

I had seen a green laser from a plane. It's very distracting, but it is very difficult to see from where it comes from. I've been to Manchester recently, and something caught my attention, I thaught it was coming from the wing so I looked out, but it was actually brighter than the wing lights, and came from down there ! Anyway, it happened twenty minutes before landing, and I'd roughly estimate our flying height from the ground at >1000 meters, but someone who knows more in aviation may help me there.

But there was no beam, just a bright dot.

All I can say is that it doesn't flash blind you at a km, but it distracts you like hell. I assume it would be a lot brighter with a >100mW green laser.

Anyone've seen a laser from a plane already ?

if it's by accident, it's unlikely that you'd cause an accident, nor will they pursue the matter.

Shine it at a plane and you probably won't get caught.
Shining it at a police helicopter is beyond stupid. The helicopter can turn around and they can find your exact location with their IR camera/nightvision/spotlight.

If you're going to shine a laser at a heli it'd better be a yag (1064) and you better keep it directed right at that FLIR camera!!!

j/k, could you only imagine what a decent hobbiest yag laser would do to a half million dollar FLIR camera!!!

And think of the charges,

intefearing with police activity,
destorying federal properity in excess of $500K
Making it possible for a criminal to excape,
directing high power laser (weapon) at federal officers,

can you think of any others??

Sounds like a great idea if being alive and breathing just isn't working for you anymore. The last time I heard, police respond to weapons threats with weapons of their own..

I heard about a dude in brooklyn who not only aimed at 2 airplanes, damaging a pilot's eyesight, but then when he was tracked down by a helicopter with an infrared camera, attempted to laser the helicopter as well, making him incredibly easy to find. what fucking jackass. I bet and hope he was beaten severely

here's text from the article

"A Campbell man is in big legal trouble over something police say he was doing with a hand-held green laser.

Police arrested 39-year-old Michael Weeker, of Campbell, this week. They say he is responsible for shining the laser at helicopter pilots several times over the past three years.

He was arrested Monday night a short time after a Sheriff's office helicopter flight crew was struck with a laser while flying over the South Bay.

A flight observer was able to pin-point the source of the laser and guide special operation detectives in to the exact location. They said that's where they found Weeker.

The arrest is the result of a joint effort between the sheriff’s, San Jose police and the F.B.I.

It started following several reports from pilots who said they had been struck in the eyes with a green laser.

Police say lasers can be very dangerous and affect both civilian and commercial flight crews.

Exposure to green laser can cause permanent damage to the eye that may include blindness.

Prior to Monday's arrest, police said they had a general neighborhood location of the person who was point the laser, but it wasn't until this week that they were able to get an exact location.

If convicted, Weeker could face up to eight years in prison."

lol 8 years in federal prison. hope that works out for him.

They WILL getcha. And the way they will do it is with a combo of several technologies:global imaging, global positioning, and IR cameras to name a few. These days if you do ANYTHING illegal, and you are outside, don't even look up...they just took your picture! Last year someone here posted a picture of their neighborhood in which you could clearly see that green color we all love so much. The pic came from Google Earth. Good thing they were only pointing into clear air. Anybody else remember that?
