Advice on mounting a T0-3 Diode in a host!

Check out this thing :eg:

SKY RAY king 3xCREE XM-L T6 4x18650 2000-Lumen Super Power Flashlight_SKY RAY Flashlights_Electronics Wholesale online

I think It looks more like a laser than that ebay one, and its half the price too! Plus it takes 4x 18650, It will have huge run time. 5 hours if you use 3100mah 18650s

Had a similar host arrive today:

Personally I don't like the looks of it, but the head offers a LOT of room and if that's indeed a 18650 variant, it just might provide all the room and heatsinking power this build needs.

ohh nice, i saw that, but i thought it didnt have the height i need.

i opted for this host, its go a 62mm heat diameter and a 40mm reflector depth.

Looks good but what batteries can it fit? Will it be enough for all the things we mentioned earlier?

damn lots of neet stuff here! I have a skyray king on order too and a bunch of small TEC units too I have just been hashing out how to use the tec's in a build. This diode of yours has TEC built into it!! Very kewl! My 685nm is really beautifull but also very hard to get a good beamshot with but it's only 35mw. In person you would say wow that is some dark red beam but on cam it has proven a disapointment for me.. But I am no photographer though..

Nice Job cant wait to see it complete.. Hopefully you can get a better beam shot than I.

the smaller host on the left looks pretty awesome :D

How did I miss this thread!?

Hows the progress Fiddy? I have a very similar build planned, maybe I could buy a heatsink off of you?

Great work as always!

You bought this diode.. Sweet. I was actually going to buy it for back up.:p

I own 2 of these Based diodes but mine came with the actually correction lab mount they where used in.:)

First you must run this diode with TEC at all times.! No Exceptions. The Diode is Mounted on a TEC not a Heatsink the for the heat has no where to go. THe TEC is what is keeping the diode cool and nothing else. You will LED your diode in a Matter of seconds if you power it on at even threshold.

Next you will need some serious correction optics to even think about getting a working beam out of these. Even the Prism set up on min is not enough. Its about as Good as a 635nm diode Multi mode with G1 lens. So I can only imagine how bad it is without Correction optics. Its Probably 2x worse

Anyway if you want anything remotely as good as at least a 635nm Multi mode laser your going to have to use a Prism set up or C Lenses. If you want better you will need to use both.

I plain on using Both.;) But this Project is on the Back burner now. Iam No where near started on it.

SO After you figured out what optics you want to use your going to have to worry about heatsinking which Is Not that bad for this diode.:) Really it doesn't take much.

Its a Small Tec that IIRC runs at ~1A. A Heatsink ~200g will keep it cool for a few minutes. If you look at the labby i have you can see there is not much there. However it is suppose to be mounted on a block so....

You dont even need to run this diode at 1A.:) Thats the cool thing. At least for mine i dont.

I was running mine at 850mA the TEC at 1A and i was getting 550mW. SO iam sure yours is right on or around there too.:)

Here is a Video i shot of it. Just beam shot for the color but yeah you can see a difference.

Only running it ~330mW.:D at 550mA.:)

Oh and i have added C Lenses. Without the C lens added its was a Wide beam with Just the Prisms.

PM me Mitch if you have any questions.:) I did a Little messing around with these so maybe i can help out.

Wow nice lazeerer!

I got the diode yesterday, so i will be doing testing soon!

I plan to run the laser @ 1050mA and run the TEC @ 1400mA.

Ive got a big heatsink design for it, its about 55mm round and 40mm long, so should be good for cooling.

Iv started doing the drawings for the heatsink, but im not going to make it until i can get a focal length ball park figure of when it comes into focus, i decided to use one of your 635-C-L's for this too :)

Nice.!

If you are going to be happy with No Correction optics thats Great.:) THe dot "Really a Line" was like 90mm at 20 feet with no correction optics. SO iam not sure if you have powered it on yet to see but if you haven't i think your going to want to correct it.:)

The TEC was at 1A and the laser was ROCK SOLID at 550mW only moved a 20-30mW after about 5 minutes due to the lab heatsink heating up. Iam Not sure on 1.4A. THat just sound a little high to me for this diode. I might call coherent up to ask and see if they can help me out on this. Ill try calling tomorrow for us.

The Paper work i got with my diodes are actual live Testing on the diode not a standard datasheet. In other words it was pre tested before it was shipped out when it was ordered back in 2004.. Iam going to have to check and see if they had a Currant for the TEC written down . I dont think they did.:(

I know they had Temp testing and the WL was 675nm at 25C. So I would expect for it to stay around that. These are 670nm diode.

The Testing Show 20C & 25C.

20C 671mA =479mW after Lens
25C 1008mA - 520mW After Lens.

So you can see they are very Temp sensitive. Not that bad compared to other diodes iam working on but they are.

15C-20C seems to have the Sweet spot.

Ill look over my paper work that i have and see what else new i can find that might help you out.

Worst case we can test the Temp to see at what currant the TEC is at 20C.

Wow awesome, yeah the TEC current isnt listed anywhere i have looked, it would be great to find that out :)

heres what ive got so far:

Doesn't look complicated actually.

Widest material I can work with is 47mm though, but I'm sure that any other machinist in the forum can cut that up for you!

You might also want to cut a pocket for driver on the butt of the heatsink.
Less fuss than mount it elsewhere.

my lathe at work can do in excess of 100mm so im sweet :)

going to mount one driver on-top of the pill and 1 in the pill.

Shes alive!

Did a little test video of it firing up:

Running 1050mA into the TEC and 700mA Max into the LD.

power is pretty poor, but ill put that down to my lense alignment, also i suspect the heat produced by the tec's hot sight is affecting the power too.
