Ok, so imagine this. You put a 9 volt battery with the positive and negative connected to the switch. Obviously when you activate the switch, it sparks. So what if you put this into a project box, and filled it with kerosene?? Push the button, BOOM!!! :D

Could someone tell me if this would work? I would put a rubber cover over one of the battery ends where the wire connects. I would leave the positive metal uncovered, so it will spark. Pictures:

(brown=rubber orange=kerosene)

Good idea, huh? ;) ;D

Yeah its the vapour thats flammable, so drowning it in kero wont work. Also, if you solder the wire to the switch and battery, it wont spark, it would just screw up your switch and melt the wires.

There's no oxygen in there to let the Kerosene burn. Use a different fuel and throw in a powerful oxidizer and it should work as long as the wire is thin enough in an area.

Oh. Yeah, I just expected fire, anyway. So what would be something to replace it with?

I want one of those lizards. ;D My parents never wanted me to get small animals. :'( I'll be getting a ferret when I can convince them.

My biggest hobby is fishkeeping. Right now I'm using a 30 gallon tank, but I will be getting a 120 gallon early next year (because of my ever-growing fire eel).

Take a very fine wire with high resistance, say, some steel wool or something.. nichrome wire would be ideal.. Now dip this wire in some type of gunpowder mixture and allow to dry.. Pass current through the wire, it will melt and ignite the gunpowder. THAT is how you create ignition with electricity... If you just short out a 9v battery not much happens.. it might warm the battery up and the electrolyte might leak out, that's about it. They also sell premade ignitors for model rocketry which are basically the same thing.

As for a "bomb", you can't really make one with kerosene... at best you'd get a largish fire.. You'll need something self-oxidizing in a sealed container if you want it to actually explode... In order for something to burn you need a fuel, heat, and oxygen. In order for it to explode it'll have to have all those three things inside a sealed container from which it cannot escape... The burning will produce gas which cannot escape so ruptures the container. The reason gunpowder explodes in sealed containers is because it contains sodium nitrate, which provides oxygen for the burn... If you just put a flammable substance in a sealed container and provide heat it won't do anything, it won't even burn, it needs oxygen.

Just for fun I'll point out some of the errors in your suggestion... For one, if there were any spark to be had it would be at the point where the connection is made, ie: in the switch.. if there's a solid connection to the battery there's nothing to cause a spark.. electricity has to jump across a gap for there to be a spark.. Secondly, 9v isn't going to spark... if any spark was made it would be so tiny it would never ignite kerosene... You'll need a solid arc of at least a thousand volts if you want to ignite something with a spark. Lastly, the switch is ON THE BOMB... if this actually worked you'd have to be touching the bomb to set it off, can you see how this might be a bad thing?

You sound a bit young to be playing with "bombs"... It's best if you learn the physics behind it before you go and do something stupid... Do a lot more reading before you play with putting flammable things together trying to get an explosion.

Like I said, I didn't expect an explosion, just something to do for fun. ;D It would be dangerous, but could I put gunpowder over steel wool, then run a current through it? Not that I would be doing it.

Since this is sort of related, have any of you ever done firespinning? I can't wait to try it this winter!! :D

a gas ie propane, butane, gasoline vapor, acetylene, hydrogen, ect and an oxidzer ie pure oxygen, air, n2o will work good

yeah, like pseudo said, [rant] BEFORE YOU PLAY WITH FLAMMABLE SUBSTANCES, LEARN WHAT IT REALLY HAPPING PHYSICIS WISE. IF YOU KNOW WHATS GOING ON, YOU HAVE A BETTER CHANCE OF DOING IT IN A SAFER WAY. [end rant]

ALSO. . .

SAFETY FIRST!!!

one more note, stay away from acetylene and hydrogen along with powerful oxidizers. bad thing happen to those who dont know what they are doing.

Ahahah, you should have told me that when I designed my "Boom Tubes"!!!

Three 3 foot long 2 inch diameter sprinkler pipe with the bottom end capped and top open, a little hole in the bottom, and oxy acetyl welder to fill the tubes with gas and a propane torch to flare into the fill hole.
Wicked loud!!!!! Like 50 cal loud!! but without the really fast moving deadly chunk of lead ;D

what if you used a transformer to spike up the voltage, then just fill the box to half of it and let the sparks be born :P?

anyone can make a gun fully automatic, and only the smart people acquire them legally. because they know if you get caught, its 30 in the buttrape prisons.
sometimes you just need to think these things through.

speaking of oxy acetaline we were making balloons at a friends place... when the bag got to be the size of a basketball, it went off. we couldn't hear for an hour :'(
