Yeah, but what's zat funny blue glow at the top of the tube, and why did all that silver on the glass turn white??

If you don't understand the above, you don't even want to know about microphonics.... I hate vac tubes!

I rather enjoy using tubes. They're so much more durable and forgiving than semiconductors, as with a tube, if you overvolt or overcurrent it, it just gets red, and by then you usually notice an issue and turn it off... saving you a nice sum of money.

With semiconductors, there's no oops. You overvolt or overcurrent something it's bound to explode, pop, or melt. And when the magic smoke is released, that's it. No amount of begging will bring your precious mosfet back.

On a side note, I'm going to work on a vacuum tube amplifier using EL34's I got. I hope it works well!

I to agree vacuume tubes are nice , for one thing they look nice , not just a plastic square like a mosfet and as mentiond they can take alot more abusse befor the fail :D .

Plus i made a 1.3 watt SE valve amplifier for my room and its awsome :p

I think next on my list of things to do is finally commit to building a TC. Flybacks and NST's are nice, but there is no substitute to 100kV @ >150kHz. I wish they weren't so expensive though.

VTTC's are great, but finding adequate tubes these days without spending an arm and a leg is a real challenge.

It looks like an old radar tube!

Bet that thing is rated >5kW!

Btw, anyone find a good schematic for a VTTC?

Heh Nice find , ive seen a few 4-1000a tubes always expensive when i see them ,
i had a gu43b , 1kw andode dissapation but its gone to air , and my gu81 is 450 watts dissapation .

4-1000a has 1000 watts anode dissapation and can dilver up to 3340 watts of RF power in class C amplifier operation :D

Aslo here is the VTTC circuit most people follow .
