Hi, I recently put a lowball bid in for some eBay 808nm 1 watt 9mm diodes, you may have seen the eBay listing for a lot of 5.... Anyway, I won them...woooHoo....
Don't know much about these diodes and the ad have precious few details. I was hoping someone here could give me a little insight into what I can expect from them...are they like other diodes that have a rated wattage but can be safely run higher? If so, how much wattage can I push them to? Also, what kid of current and voltage should I shoot for as a max? Anybody around the forum selling heatsinks for these?
Thanks for the help!
Jeff

If I am correct, the most these generally should run at is around 1.4A of current, which corresponds to about 2V I think on their PIV curve - that should safely output around 1-1.2W or so.

Regarding modules: I *believe* that someone does it, but I can't remember who -.-

Rhd had some 9mm modules custom machined a while back... He called them the MOD9. ;)

IDK if he has any more.

Edit: I think PontiacG5 makes them as well...

Probably still leftovers from Heruursciences (he won a huge lot of laser stuff when a diode manufacturing company shut down)

I've sorted through a lot of his diodes, towards the end of when he was selling them here on the forum the good to dud ratio was pretty horrible, around 10-20%.

If the diodes you get are good, then they should be putting out a bit over a watt at 1.2A, forward voltage about 1.5-2v. They also tend to be rejects so actual wavelength could range anywhere from 700-900nm or more.

I'd recommend getting goggles for 808nm if you're gonna mess with these diodes.

Reject diodes that were intended to be 808 can range 700-900nm or more? Is there indication that they were really manufactured to be 808?

Heruursciences dosn´t sell on eBay anymore. He is banned there. He only sells on eBid and just 2 or more Wattages ones. Wanted to buy some from him, but he even dosn´t care to reply to messages.

The diodes that are sold on eBay are quite accurate. They are operating in a range from 805 to 812nm. I just made some experiences with one seller there and his diodes were really good ones, but there are a few people selling them, so can´t tell how good those are.

You bet. I found a defective red diode once that emits at 580nm!

Cyp - that's incredible D: Do you still have it? That must be worth a fortune.

Just a thought, you do know 808nm is pretty much invisible to the naked eye?
(slight dull dark red dot is all you will see at best) you will never see the beam unless your under night vision.

just though id point that out since you posted it in the 'Red Laser' section.

yeah, i knew that...posted here because i thought they were similar in operating parameters to the reds....voltage wise...also, i didn't know there was a thread for IR but then again, i didn't look hard either and there probably is....

i just got my AixiZ style mounts in today. I am wiring up two diodes as we speak. I have a couple IR night vision scopes I intend to use these for as Super Illumiators...I did get a couple glass lenses optimized for red that I will try with these but honestly, these will probably work just fine without lenses for my application and be safer as well unfocused. I have a Mini14 and a IR scope and one of these will be mounted in a tactical flashlight host on a rail under the barrel. I am going to run the first one with a 350mA buck/boost driver and a CR123 cell and see how much illumination it puts out. i will also try one with a DDL LM1084 set to about 1.2a.

i actually pad for five but was sent six....one will be pushed to failure just to see how far it will go.

These were bought from Joent8jes on eBay...i will report back on whether or not they all are good. I have no way to measure the wavelength so that will be a mystery for now.

thanks for all the advice and help.
Jeff

ahh very good!

i too have several NV goggles/monocular/binoculars!

you will find the GEN1 will pickup 808nm nicely!

my digital NV set uses the 940-980nm illuminator so it is undetectable to the human eye. But can see 808nm too.

theres a few vids of mine with 780 and 808nm in the ir and other colored lasers section.

Post picks when you get the goods!

Fiddy.
