andy, you've seen my post at PL, in it i guesstimate what the diode is. It does need a heatsink as over 500mW must be dissipated from the laser diode. it can be pushed higher, presumably sacrificing lifetime.

Very nice set-up. One question though, did you buy Matlab on your own? "Find" a copy? Business pay for it? Student Edition? That's one expensive piece of software to have at home.

OMG that is so AWESOME, that's like the awesomest laser video I've seen since I can remember :D
Seriously I hope you get over 20.000 views on that video and earn some money.

Pull, it's a student copy.

Switch, thanks! But I won't earn any money back with that video. Not so long as the rating stays below 3. People on metcafe rate harshly (and it is a very crappy video from a visual/artistic perspective)!

DANG. awesome video, added to favorites. are you controlling it with a BASIC stamp or some other kind of microcontroller?

What you can't see is how sharp the BR beam can be focused. It is amazing that pin point :D
I'm glad Lava could make a video to share -- This science stuff is great !

heyy, its leukoplast!! u quit lasercommunity too? i did.
damn, i wish there was a way to make some damn money for a 16 year old. im perfectly capable of ALL of the laser technology out there right now but don't have money to fund it. lol

Re: 6x blu-ray 100mW 405nm laser lighting a match!

matlab is totally not necessary for this simple type of control. You could do this with a die4drive or any high impedance modulatable driver, an LPT r-2r ladder, and autoit3.

andy, just aixiz case/lens.

diachi, it's a script made in MATLAB for the PCI1200. There are many other ways you could get DC-level voltages out of your PC, such as a LPT ladder DAC and a simple script made in Autoit.

Yay a fellow AutoIter :)

Yeah, the LC is to much of a Nazi regime now. Its actually surprising you can still talk about other lasers at all. (without mention of name of course)

very nice. this was more impressive that any green "match kill" I ever seen. Could the energy in short wave length help burn better? Or you had it super focused to less than 1mm at the match head?

In any case, future of our hobby looks GREAT !!!

thanks for posting!

Wow! This guy is going places.... You could make some serious $$ with this knowledge. I was looking at some higher powered 405nm diodes, but they are quite expensive. I found a company that sells a 60mW for $800 a pop. But I'm sure you could get a price discount for bulk. And I'm sure given a few years, blu-ray burners will be more abundant. You shouldn't wait till then!

This is continues wave correct?

There is offer for $400 for 85mWC if we order 10 or more.
