650nm diodes

Not much demand for them anymore.
-Blu-rays have been steadily replacing DVD's,
-638nm has much better visibility and this makes it attractive to hobbyists.
-Plenty of cheap 445's and 405's if you want to make a burning laser.
 





Yes, the wavelength is for the collection. Most of what I've seen being sold as 650nm are actually these diodes. Bought an older 650nm off of Blackwolf that came from Sci-first and the color and output mimics these diodes.
On a side note, I just built another one today into a pen host and it runs at 365mW with a G and 3.7V LiFePO4 10440 using a Blitzlinear driver. It might be able to handle a regular 10440 4.2V at well over 400mW but it will more likely blow.

Laserlands on Ebay raised the price to 5 for 25 now. Still a good deal on them but if you live in the states you can buy one much quicker for a bit more from:

He also sells the 150mW blu-ray diodes. A good setting is about 150mA and I wouldn't push past 160 or it will blow. He only sells them already pressed in a steel module which I don't like. He used to sell them cheap as diode only. You can always ask if he has any not pressed. 150mW of 405nm burns really well that's for sure.

I have maybe 5 of the 150mW 405nm builds and probably 20 826 builds. Hey, why not when you can build them so inexpensively. If I didn't already mention it laserlands said once these are sold supposedly they are not going to be manufactured anymore so buy while you can.

I think the 1W+ 650nm builds are more likely to be c-mount diodes. I did find a couple c-mount sinks on Ebay and ordered one as I have a 3W IR (think it's 808nm) diode I bought from Crazyspaz while he was selling most of his stuff.

I'm likely going to start a thread with all the deals I know of from over the years as there's so many new members from the past year. Some great stuff to be had for building cheap that people should know about.

The "650nm" diodes were always 660nm. 650 didn't disappear, we just realized we were being slightly misled. Many 3mW pointers will be in the 655nm range, but 650 never really existed as an average wavelength to expect, as far as I know.

No kidding. Huh. I like seeing a red red if you know what I mean. I don't really think of 635/638 as real red. I think my laserbtb 1W is a C-mount as I can't seem to find a regular diode that strong. No wonder why every 650nm looks the same to me regardless of labeling from 650-660nm. Need to pull out my 1W 650 and try to compare it. Need to look and see what I have in a class 4 anyways with these. May have just one when a bunch of us bought them during an offroadfreak GB.

yup i know the kid on ebay i purchased a lot of 650nm and after i compare some i believe its more like 660nm can you check anyway and measure the nm
on the 650 diodes i checked the diodes pdf and it pops out at 660nm to 670nm i believe :)
 
Well I know for certain I have 1 650 (or whatever it is) over a watt from laserbtb. I have another I bought back then from Blord but I believe that is a 638.
Cyp might be able to check what they run at but I cant.
 
i send you 1x650nm if you like i got like 10 i send it out on friday or saturday so you can compere it if you like.

As promised this is the point Im trying to make at least about my laserbtb 1.1W. At the time that I bought it that was some pretty powerful output. The better dot comparison pics are with my camera flash on:

I didn't quite have the spot focused to the smallest point but on the left is an Oclaro 700mW 638nm WITH a 3-element lens and on the right is the laserbtb:

I don't have a clue what lens is in the laserbtb but you get the point AND it's more powerful by a couple hundred mW than any of my Oclaro or Mits builds. Now interested.... This is a really nice laser;) Wonder how the output of the Jet one looks in comparison. Anyone own a Jet 660 1W? I can't see why someone wouldn't want one of these in comparison to the 638nm builds (other than $).

Anyone guess what that's a skull of? I know what it is and how I got it was kind of weird. When we bought the house in 1998 it was sitting in the basement (which is where the pics were taken) so I hung it on the wall:)

Made a mistake about my Oclaro and Mits builds as I have them over 1W and I think 1 of the 500 is a freak and was over 1.3W peak.

No wonder you got such a good deal on the house! :crackup:

That PL-650 is a very nice laser, I've got one, although mine only outputs 1W; still pretty impressice.

That's probably a 1/4 of my amps:) There are about 30 in this outrageous system as I treated it like a "let's see what is possible" kind of home theatre project that turned into a monster lol. ThE basement is not usually so messy but my 22 year old son is living with us right now and there's only so many places to fit his stuff and my stuff;)
What you are actually seeing in that picture is the 2 stacks on the table to the left of the lamp go to a 2 channel 700w/ch (rms) system with a bunch of old dbx components that drive a pair of original dbx sf1 (soundfield imaging) speakers that contain 4 10" subs, 4 5" mids and 6 tweeters each in a very interesting configuration. Best speakers I've ever heard. Full 20-20000hz. They have a special controller that MUST be used with them or they sound terrible. They took 8 years to develop and are very different from what you would be used to. The speakers have a specific orientation in that they face each other far apart and most of the sound travels toward and 180 degrees away from each other while about half the power fires to the front and rear and the 6 tweeters fire at a specific angle up. They create a gigantic sound stage and regardless of where you are in the room you hear stereo sound. You can stand right next to one of them and the sound is still balanced unlike a traditional setup where the closer you get to one speaker the louder that one is. They are rated for 400w/ch rms and weigh somewhere around 90lbs each. Besides the very sophisticated controller they have the most complicated large crossover I've ever seen before.
Basically they are magic from 1985 and I also have a pair of sf10 with controller which are one step down from the flagship sf1 ($2800 in 1985).

As Cyp has mentioned before 650nm really isn't 650nm. He says it is more like a 655-660nm range . I find it very annoying when things are not labeled properly and I find myself hesitating everytime I say 650nm but in this case it's labeled as that. We see 635 and 638nm used interchangeably and if you buy a 462nm diode Jordan shows it testing as 464nm so what do you call them other than what manufacturers or laser sellers label them as.
