Re: 5W ophir 20C laser power meter by Offroad

You can either use the DPDT switch that you have right now
for the 2 Poles required for the OPHIR split supply and
get a SPDT toggle switch for the Display like these SPDT
Toggle switches...

Lot 3 x SPDT Toggle ON/OFF/ON 3 Position Piano Switch | eBay

OR

You can get a 3PDT toggle switch and handle the OPHIR head
and Display at the same time. A 3PDT toggle switch like this...

AC 250V 2A 125V 6A ON/OFF/ON 3 Position 3PDT 9 Terminals Toggle Switch | eBay

Ok i see, i am just going to add a small SPDT next to the current switch or underneath the LPM because i don't want to ruin the looks of it and i allready cut out the alluminium for the current switches..

I will figure out a nice way to solve this  Thanks jerry if you weren't here i would find a empty 9V battery in my lpm in a few weeks :p

greetings,,

EDIT: @ the rest thanks for all nice comments, very usefull information in this thread

If looks are a big thing, you could use a reed switch instead. Then your ophir head would be activated by a magnet with no external modifications lol. Secret switch FTW

You still need 3 contacts to switch the DPM and OPHIR
head.. And with a reed switch to control all that you
will also need a 3PDT Relay..

Right I missed that both the leads off the Ophir need to be cut. Well then, get two reed switches and put them right next to eachother lol.

Maybe changing out your main switch would be the best bet so you don't have to mess with multiple switches. I also just realized something, why would you need multiple throws? Wouldn't a 3PST work perfectly since all you need is an off and on?

I was thinking of doing something like this:

or i have to buy a switch like this:

3PST 6 Terminals on Off Selector Toggle Switch AC 15A 250V 10A 380V | eBay

IMO, a single switch is a better design but two switches doesn't really look bad and would probably work fine.

Like I posted above.... This is a much smaller switch
that would easily fit in your enclosure and is cheaper.

AC 250V 2A 125V 6A ON/OFF/ON 3 Position 3PDT 9 Terminals Toggle Switch | eBay

The switch you liked to is WAY TOO BIG (15Amps) for
what you want to do..
The DPM will draw about 120mA and the OPHIR head will
draw about 30-40mA per rail.

Then again it is your LPM you could even use a few of
these....:eg:

That switch is awesome!!! :p :p

Anyway i am ordering your suggestion right now. Only thing is that the hole i drilled for the previous switch is way to big. But i have a solution for that :san:

Will post pics when done :san:

EDIT: Too bad they don't have 3PST switches in the shape i have now

Hey guys,

A quick question. I am building another one for smeerworst but in order to make the cable i need to have one of those 4 pin female connectors that go into the ophir. Does anyone where i can get those? I only need one :p

Also i am up to a cool solution for the switch problem but shipping from china is sloowww

I have those 4-pins connectors. In my old days I collect a lot of old computers. You will be amazed how much useful parts it has. Heatsinks, cables, connectors, switches, LED panels, jumpers, etc :)
Anyway I sent you one. PM me with your address.

***edit*** AAARHHG, the 4-pins connector has only three live wires, one hole is empty. That is a shame because it fits perfectly on my Ophir head.

If you have more than one connector you can remove a wire from it and install it in the 3 wire connector.

I love those switches, but for full effect you need to make sure you get lots of arcing an copper splash - proper frankenstein like, (and make a whohahahaarrr sound as you throw the switch) :)

Serious note, could the 3 "supplies" be switched with FET/s or transistors?
Have 1 pannel switch that turns on 3 FETS which in turn switch the 3 9v supplies?
You could even have a push button control, where it turns on for say 10mins and auto powers off with a simple timer circuit.

I'm crap at power electronics....just thinking of an elegant solution.
