I bought a 5mW laser from ebay, it has no make, and no wavelength and output sticker, and when it arrived it works but is really dim even with new alkalines, I'm suspecting it's a heat problem, because my laser laser worked good when it's warm, but this new one work incredibly good with a nice bright beam, but only when it's cold, when I've been handling it for a while, it really dim, when I put it in the freezer for 1min it is awesome.

Is there any way to counter from putting it in the freezer?

Thanks.

You CAN try good rechargeable batteries to see if it's current flow issue from certain batteries, but there's most likely nothing you can do. This is due to the fact green lasers use crystals and they move around very slightly based on temperature. You're best bet would be to be another one from Ebay (try ItemQuickShop). You could try to take it apart and re-align the crystals ,but it takes great skill.

It is most likely an issue with the pump diode.
The wavelength of diodes can shift as the temperature varies.
If it lases to far from 808nm (even 1-2nm difference) the crystal may not be able to convert much of the light to green, hence the problem you describe.

buy a 40 watt peltier element and a CPU cooler and freeze that sucka' to -10c nice cool ( really cool ) awesome laser

Well, it seems that a 5mw laser can light for no more than 20-seconds, or the body may heat and the light may get dim.
Maybe you do not put it in the freezer, just have it rest for a while...

i have heard of the "Freezer" trick before
why does it make the laser better for a while?
and does it kill the overall laser life?
thanks
