445nm Goggles

Re: Feeler: Protection goggles for new 445nm diodes

Already have two pairs, but at this price, count me in for one more... hey, I am not taking any chances when guests want to see my new 445nm laser.

Thanks mfo for taking the lead on this one.

Goggles for 445nm

Ok, I know someone is going to kill me for asking this, but... how effective will the cheap focalprice goggles be against this new diodes?

Since they are rated for 405 to 532nm, I believe they will also block this ones. However, I know they are not gonna hold 1W for so long. Will there be anyone kind enough to make the tests?

I know they do not replace certified goggles, but if they are able to block a direct hit for 1 second and not allowing more than 5mW to pass...

Re: Goggles for 445nm

I think for burning experiences they are good enough, but I won´t use them when there is a chance of a direct hit!
I use my big lasers outside most of the time so there won´t be a problem for me wearing my o-like/focalprice goggles and shining around.

But I agree that someone should test it with focal-goggles, LPM. I put $1 into the goggle-torture box to kill one for the science!

Re: Goggles for 445nm

Depends on the rated optical density of those goggles at 445nm. The higher the optical density the more protection. An optical density of 3 will reduce the power by a factory of 1000. So a 1W laser, 1000mW, would be reduced to about 1mW.

Re: Goggles for 445nm

I would suspect that as soon as they are hit either directly or via reflection, the spot that was hit would just melt.

Re: Feeler: Protection goggles for new 445nm diodes

I contacted OEM Laser Systems about a group purchase of the ARG glasses. I'll let you know what they say.

Re: Feeler: Protection goggles for new 445nm diodes

I have these same goggles from DL and also the ones for 600nm-740nm for my red lasers. They both came in a soft bag type case with a cleaning cloth. I thought for the protection they provided they are very good.

I just wanted to run it by some other members that these should provide adequate protection from the new 445nm diodes at the higher levels? Let me also say I take extreme precautions when using my lasers, I treat them all like a loaded weapon, one can never be too careful.

Re: Feeler: Protection goggles for new 445nm diodes

Guys, if those are truly OD8 you're not gonna be able to see the laser AT ALL. Not even the dot...

Edit: Like I pointed out in the other thread:

At OD8 you have 0.000001% transmittance of light through the glasses. At 1W that's 0.001mW coming through. YOU CAN'T SEE THAT. Especially if your laser is lower than 1W.

Maybe after we figure out what are the Right goggles for our needs..
We can organize a GB for those.
But im all in for the idea.

Re: Goggles for 445nm

Well, they don't work very well as safety glasses then, do they? No one has tested them at other wavelengths yet??

Updated.

I think it'd be important to see the actual beam.... I don't fully understand the VTL rating. The ARG glasses have a VTL reading of 48%, where most glasses I've looked at have a rating of 10-15%. Would having a higher visual light rating offset any of the visibility lost with the higher OD value?
