I recently picked up a couple of gold pen
hosts from Daguin's paypal replenishing sale
and decided to do a lowered powered 445
build suitable for pocket carrying. The diode
is an m-140 from DTR and the driver is a
ghostdrive from lazorlabs set at 501 mA.
Since these hosts have a hole above the
button area I decided to incorporate an LED
into this build (thanks to sigurthr for the
wiring help ;)). I used a green 2mm LED from
LED-switch.com and a 470 Ohm resistor to
keep the current to the LED under 20 mA.
I did the LPM run on some pretty drained batteries
so I would expect that this build should hit 400 mW+
on a full charge. Here are some pictures, enjoy.

The driver setup:

Here the resistor is attached to the driver (+) in and and then connected to the (+) input of the LED, the (-) input of the LED is then connected to the driver (-) in.
All of the connections were heat shrink wrapped after the photos were taken to avoid any of the charge carrying components from contacting the host.

Oooh, very nice work! Don't see a lot of pen builds these days. Glad to be of help! How's the duty cycle look so far?

Pretty short, after about 30 seconds it gets a bit warm so
I'm going to observe 30 seconds as a reasonable duty cycle.
You can't really see it in the picture on this post but there is a
little piece of aluminum on the back of the ghostdrive in an
attempt to supply some heatsinking. As this is a fixed focus
build, I don't really anticipate doing much burning so 30s is
adequate for pointing IMO.

+1, epic host mate! I actually have the SAME plan in mind, it's a shame I didn't pick up any of Dave's pens :/ Willing to part with any? :p Anyway, great build! 2 pens in a week, nice ;)

Very nice! Cool to see a 445 build in a pen. The LED is a nice touch.

Thanks guys ;), pen hosts are awesome you can get a lot of power in a very unassuming package...
@ghostchrome, the ghostdrive is great, will definitely be picking up a few more...what is the difference between v1 and v2?

Right on, thanks.

The v2 driver has bigger pads for the resistors on the back (for more current options), wider traces, and is a able to disperse heat a bit better than the v1 GhostDrive. It still still has all the same components though.
