Well Mike, i'll join the 'scared' club with ya. I just changed mine to run at 150mA. Its now getting 135+mW after a (very dirty I may add) aixiz acrylic!

I am glad I am not the only one who has had this..... I thought my CC drive circuit must have a problem when I saw the ma rising...that is assuming, from comment in your first post, you are using cc mike?

I'm using a "junkbox" driver  ---  parts I have around.  5 Volt LDO a cap a resistor and a pot --- Simple and effective. I uses what I have in my junk box ;D   CV driver into a 10 ohm pot.

You're a smokin dude  ;D  Check that lens --  150 mA should give almost 150 mW but your diode may be different.  Watch the heat and go in small steps.  Don't try to be a hero here -- it costs too much.

It peaks a bit above 140mW, but I'm sure I'm losing at least 10mW from this lens. It has like a hair or something in the lens itself. I've tried everything and even after extensive cleaning the pattern still looks like a crater when its expanded. I should be getting a few new lenses in the mail shortly so I'll let ya know what happens 8-)
 
Have any of you blown any diodes? if yes, at what current?

I blew one at ~280mA  ;D

I should also add that it was a mistake, and I didn't 'build up' to 280. The driver had something wrong with it and the diode failed, so I checked the current and it was about 280mA
 
What would you say the difference in difficulty of making a kryton tube laser vs. a small tube laser pointer is? (battery config, driver installation, housing modules required?, lost of custom work involved?)

On a scale of 1-10.

+ and explanation of what is probably the hardest part of just such a build.

Building a laser with the kryton is cake. It comes with everything you need, sans a diode. (includes a driver, lens, etc etc... all the basics)

Plus there is a lot of room inside the kryton barrel for a number of different configurations. The tail clicky makes powering it on very simple, instead of having to wire in a switch on your driver.

I would say the hardest part of the kryton would be pressing the diode into the head. Its a very tight squeeze, but the head provides EXCELLENT heat sinking.

With a pen style, you will need to do some modification to the body to make everything fit and work right, but with the kryton there is absolutely no custom work to be done. Just solder it up and you're done.
