so it seams like most would decide to unban so we need to get an admin involved and see if we can make this happen.

In post #2 he was called a dumbass (this is what was originally posted "That doesn't work. This guy is a bit of a dumbass" ) ARGlaser went back and edited it but as you can see in post #4 where it was quoted, dumbass was the term he used originally. Then in post #7 ARGlaser goes on to say and I quote "This guy is nothing but lies ". So in the first 7 posts for this thread he was called a dumbass and a liar. I could quote more examples but you get the point I'm making. If that’s not being a bully than please explain to me what is. I fully support everyone’s right to their opinion and to be skeptical, however some of you might want to put a little more thought into your words before you start typing them.

Yup, that is the truth. I edited it out so I didn't look as foolish, I realised after I made the comment that I looked like an ass myself.

I said the lies comment in terms of the 3.5A and 4W which was later proven to not be said by Rick. That one was based off of the assumption which clearly was not true. I also based it off of the fact that the laser was being sold with "5300mAh" 18650's which is not true.

I do get a little caught up in heard mentality at times, it's easy to jump on the bandwagon.

Perhaps in this case I was too quick to jump to conclusions. Most of what I said though was based on the fact that someone said he ran his diodes at 3.5A, he said that isn't true and he runs them at 2.5A, which is more realistic. Technology improves fast, but the probability of getting a harvestable 445nm diode in 2013 that can be run at 3.5A is near 0%. Many sellers from China and the USA come here claiming to sell "10,000MW BLUE LASER" and 99% of them don't turn out to be true. It makes people (especially me, since this is almost a daily event on LPF) extremely sceptical when someone claims to have a laser that's more powerful than the tech that's available to us.

...he still includes those "4000mAh" 18650's with his laser though, but there's no higher capacity 18650 available than the Panasonic 3400mAh ones. That part is still raises red flags.

I think that we've established that selling the lasers like that to circumvent FDA law doesn't work.

...and the fact that if these are 3W-3.5W lasers he should be including better eyewear than those cheap goggles on ebay. Pretty much all of the cheap goggles I've tested don't have a high enough OD to properly protect you from a 3.5W laser. If those ones do have a high enough OD then that's fine by me, but it's doubtful.

This is where my skepticism came from;

I talked to this guy and he claimed to throttle 9mm diodes at 3.5A... He then claimed that the out put would exceed 4.5 Watts. I don't know what to think. Seems a bit off putting to me.

That we are defensive, and ask for proof verifiable proof is also a good thing IMO. I mean how often do we have someone show up, make a claim/bold statement without offering any proof, of being willing to provide it, and with time find out that the person in question is full of crap.

On the flip side the honest guys, like Clif for example, end up being known as just that... honest upstanding guys.

I do find it quite accurate. This entire thread was made off assumptions and not one person contacted him for details. Everyone was quick to call him a liar, but nobody stopped to ask if he was lying.
The LPF community bullies people they don't know, I'm guilty of it as well.
Yup, I made my assumptions based on what Jolly said as well. I guess what they say about assumptions it true, it sure made an ass out of me.

My apologies to Rick, I was too quick to assume.

As I above there's often a seller that comes here claiming to have a really powerful laser and it usually turns out to be crap, it's easy to jump on the bandwagon and call it out, I didn't think or take enough consideration into the post before I made it, this is almost a daily thing to see on LPF and I only skimmed the ebay page before I posted. I'm sorry for my rudeness.

I made a mistake, we all do. I guess by replying this post I'm drawing more attention to it and fanning the flame.
I made a mistake, I noticed it, I attempted to fix it as best I could and I moved on, I'm sorry that you're still upset about it. It's easy to forget sometimes that there's a real person on the other side of the computer reading what you wrote.

I too jumped to conclusions that it was all falsities. On the other hand I too was rolling off misinformation and assumptions. I do apologize and I would really like to see how this plays out if Trevor can back the specs.

It's easy to jump on the bandwagon, especially when presented with clearly bad information.

At this point Rick also has at least two offer to LPM his lasers.

Personally I'm just as interested to see whether the laser hits 3.5W, or that he hits 3W+ on a regular basis, as I am in five mode drivers that work well at 2.2A+ for diodes.

Maybe one of the mods, or c0ld can weigh in on the ban question.

At this point there is not much more to do here until Rick responds.
 
I'm giving him a call first thing tomorrow morning to find out more information and to prove or disprove a few hypotheses.

I'll report back.

I just got off the phone with Rick. Cleared up a few of my questions.

  1. Sensor Model / Calibration
    • The sensor is an Ophir 30(150)A-SV-V1. Rated 30W but can do 150W intermittently. ±3% accuracy and ±1% linearity when calibrated by Ophir.
    • It was last calibrated in 2008. According to him, when measuring *140-based lasers ranging 1-2W, his meter measures ~200 milliwatts higher than a 3.2W LaserBee.
  2. Measurement Temperatures
    • The LPM and lasers do not ordinarily reside in his garage. They are usually in the house, in a climate controlled environment.

Based on that information, I'm leaving him several recommendations.

  1. Run another test of the "4W" laser, when both the laser and LPM have equalized to room temperature.
  2. Measure a laser of a known power against a known calibrated LPM to ensure accuracy.
  3. Explore the idea of having the LPM calibrated, for scientific rigor.

When I get back to school, I'm going to take a laser to the lab, LPM it, and then ship it off to be compared on his LPM. The large difference from the LaserBee is what concerns me most, because the LaserBee is what was most recently calibrated (I highly doubt Jerry calibrates against an LPM calibrated in 2008). I'm going to follow up for a more exact figure of that differential.

Rick claims to be harvesting from different projectors from us, which is intriguing because it seems like all the manufacturers buy diodes made from the same Nichia dies. Can anyone shed any light on this?

He also claims that out of 72 M140 diodes tested, he found none that ran over 1.5W at 1.8A, with a G1 lens.

So there you have it - all the information I found. Thoughts? Followup questions for me to pass along?

I got an email reply from Rick, I'll give him a call later as well.

The long and the short of it is, he is not claiming to hit 4W, and he is certainly not driving the diodes he uses at 3.5A.

Best approach IMO would be to just test a couple of hist lasers, that he tests beforehand, and see if his results are consistent with the results of others.

If he is hitting 3W-3.5W on a regular basis, certainly that would be great.
 
Still haven't had a chance to give Rick a call, but we've sent a couple of emails to each other.

He asked me to post this;

I tested 72 M-140 casio diodes out of the 72 most were 1.3W some 1.5W and 1 or 2 hit 1.6W set at 1800ma. on my LPM with the G1 or G2 len 1.7W to 1.9W was the max that I was getting so I stop buying the M-140 and I have been hold my LPM was testing low from some people! that they were getting 1.6W to 1.8W and over 2w with the G1 or G2 lens, Is this not odd if my LPM was test to high!!!!

This is basically consistent with what we've seen with the m140 diodes. Afaik the higher an m140 has hit so far is 2.5W with a g1 lens, but many diodes hit 2.2-2.4W.

That is a really good price. The person how gets this laser will have to assemble it before they could test it. Is really like to see how this goes.
 
It would be kind of roundabout, I'm in NJ, he is in Tennessee, you're in Kentucky, but if you want I'll LPM it.

Can't test draw... need to buy a new multimeter, but LPMing is another story.
