!!!1W of purple!!! Lighthound 2xAA (14500) 405nm 12X Handheld Minitorch

Those diodes are tougher than people think they are.

they sure can be...but there seem to be a lot of variability between individual diodes. i recommend treating them with kid gloves, drive them where you will but be careful with them. i think a soft start is a good idea for a 12x.

Hey folks just an update :) I metered this laser today to see what it was still putting out & here's what happened...

I'm a little disappointed seeing it not exactly hit the mark this time but I'm not sure if this is one of three things. It could be diode degradation from being pushed this hard for so long, could be different batteries that I'm using or because I'm measuring it with a G1 lens instead of a G2

On the better side of this I'm happy to show that this laser is still alive! I'm waiting on a battery order & getting a G2 lens again soon to see if I can get better results than this OR to find out that this diode no longer hits 1W. That would suck because then I'd have to change the title of this thread :p

Thanks Ped! It's definitely a keeper :)

I just realized I forgot to mention that my LPM may also need calibrating. I've had a couple of lasers read higher on other LPMs (specifically dmacrae's ophir LPM) than they do on mine. I know ophir sensors peak right away instead of climbing up there like mine, but they still read higher after 20-30 seconds - so there's a good chance my LPM may need a tune up. I really cannot validate this because I have not yet contacted Jerry about it.

1W or not, that's some impressive power for a 405nm. +1 for an awesome build
