I think this is entirely plausible. I have cut a Tungsten filament inside a small incandescent bulb before with a focussed 450nm beam (~2.5W).

thin, darkened metal will absorb enough heat to melt.

Well sorry if I sound as complete combining noob, as I am. But those diodes are all in series ? That seems interesting to me .. just one driver ? What kind of driver ?
 
An LM338 would do it as long as the input voltage did not exceed the voltage drop of the diodes by more
than 32V. A 65V 3A power supply would power it all.
 
Maybe with 4 of your devices combined, you could do some engraving using a mask.

I would like to see the beam hit a fluorescent material. There should be some glow before it burns up.

wow! and WOW! thanks for a peek at the insides. your work is very inspiring. i may have to give some beam combining a try myself.

I'm impressed, that's less than I had assumed. Does it need external lenses that you hold with your hand to focus the beam, or does it also have a focussing lens like "normal" lasers? And what kind of lens did you use when you cut that metal wire? It appears to bend the beam into a cone that curves inwards, which is something I had never seen.
