100% Energy density LASER

hydrogenman15 said:
.000000001 nm = gamma ray and gamma ray = atomic nuclei. Making a 0nm laser is basically a doomsday
device. ;D No need to be alarmed as only the most intense energy's can create a gamma ray, like an H bomb going off.....LOL

Or John_Lawson's wife when she sees him with a new laser ;D ;D ;D

Peace,
dave

0nm wouldn't be a wave, it would be a photon traveling in a straight line. :D if you come to think of it.10.000nm is closer to 0 than 1nm. :P

Kinda confusing, i'll ask my physics teacher, got physics in 1 hour and 20 minutes .

Light has very little mass, but it DOES have mass. Imagine a spot of light the size of a nuclear explosion, now imagine a grain of sand. That huge spot of light has the mass of a grain of sand.

This isn't entirely accurate, but it gives you the right idea ;)[/quote]
Actually that's incorrect,it's not like it has close to 0 mass,it has EXACTLY zero mass.

Really? Well, you learn something new everyday.

I was arguing with some guy who works at boeing, and i told him that light has no mass, but he told me it as very little mass. I think he was talking in terms of anti-matter. Imagine transforming a grain of sand into light, in the most effecient way. That would be quite an explosion...

It wouldnt actually be an explosion, but it would be more like a really big bright flash lamp, it would vapourise stuff and creat a huge flash. If it was an instant conversion anyway.

Yup... thats actually what i meant :P
And then imagine taking a big boulder, and doing the same thing... goodbye, earth!

I swear, one day, the human race will destry itself. These "experts" keep trying to find new ways to kill and cause mass destruction. I mean, come on! "we need machine guns and microwave lasers to fight 3rd world countries, all they have is clubs and AK-47s at the worst, that is going to be a tough fight. We need to obliterate them as much as possible, as they are a big threat"

Ya right.... big threat...
All they are trying to do is find a way to survive, and i highly doubt some incivilised country is going to bother to even think about waging war with you. Remember the countless wars in Africa? All they are is savages dancing around a fire. The worst they could do is implae you with a spear. But no, we have to call on air strikes that pour burning napalm all over their villages and incinerate the poor bastards. See what i mean? These kind of things will eventually lead to the world destroying itself...

Don't worry. The end won't be so dramatic. The system will just become overloaded and fail. The cascading collapse of civilization will cause the starvation of billions. There will, of course, be some violence in concentrated pockets of population, but by and large, it will be a relatively slow quiet death.

Well, the world will still die by its own hand...

I don't think the world is gonna just "die" at a point in time. :P We can survive the harshest environments already, what makes you think every person is just gonna die just like that? Maybe the world as we know it will die, but then again the world is always changing.

I promise to go back and read EVERY post in this thread after posting this but ...

Couldn't a wavelength of 0nm exist and ONLY exist at a said state of 0degK (0 degrees Kelvin) ? ... light = heat no matter WHAT kinda light you have.

Please correct me .... I actually want someone to prove me wrong cos I don't have a clue if I'm even close to being right or not.

OR ... would 0nm wavelength mean PURE light?

Again, I have no clue. I'm new to this whole "laser-headlights on cars" thing .... I have not a clue right now ... but you people are teaching me stuff everyday.

Thanks again

The reference is actually to "people", NOT "the world." You have to read the whole discussion to understand. Jumping on one word to make a statement is ineffective argumentation. At best, you should have asked what was meant by "the world."

The world only destroys itself because people like you are BROADCASTING the REST of the world's flaws..... Shhhhhhh. Plz 2 B not say things about 3rd world countries in this website. Plz 2 B remember ... we here only to enjoy making lasers. And SHARKS! ..... with laser-beams on thier heads! ..... MUAHaaaahaaaahaaa.

Yeah.... there are people that die for no reason. (-_-) sad ... (-_-)

Let's just enjoy our lasers!!! And forget about the "Armageddon"

Do you live in USA?

If you answer "yes" then I jest.

Yellowstone National Park houses one of the world's largest volcanoes. When it erupts .... you are going to die unless you make it to Japan or so within about 3 months. And when it happens .... are you in a monetary position to buy plane tickets that are being sought after by MILLIONS upon MILLIONAIRES to travel around the world and escape the freezing temps and total blackness for 2 years or more??

Just something to ponder ...

Sorry, just had to say something .... k, back to the LAZZZZZZZZERS! ..... maybe with sharks strapping them on their heads?!

I will try to address several questions with this response, whichever ones I can remember at least.

So, one question seems to be can you just keep packing photons into a beam of a given size indefinitely. The answer to this one is no. Remember that a photon is just a convenient way of quantizing the energy in a wave. if you have A huge number of photons in a beam you necessarily have an enormous electric field, after all, it is just and EM wave. A some point the electric field will become high enough to ionize the medium you are propagating the beam through (also MPI, etc). So now use a vacuum instead and continue packing photons into the beam, or as I light to think of it increase the intensity of the beam. Eventually at around 10^28 Wcm^-2 you will breakdown the vacuum. This is called the Schwinger (unsure of spelling) limit. It is due to some QED vacuum fluctuations and involves pulling particles and anti particles out of the vacuum (I know little of the details). This is the point at which you can no longer increase the intensity or pack in more photons.

Another question was about a wavelength of zero distance. This makes no sense. EM waves propagate because they are waves and they obey Maxwells equations. I recently mentioned something I read about cosmic rays where they have measured 10^17 eV photons. to put that into wavelength it is about 10^-14 nm which is pretty small. You can keep making a smaller wavelength and get an arbitrarily large energy per photon, but photon is just a word, in real life it is an electromagnetic wave that obeys a simple equation and waves have a wavelength, photon is just how you quantify its energy. If it is no wavelength then it is just a static electric field line coming from a charge somewhere( which is pretty boring).

Photons do not obey the Pauli exclusion principle so they can actually occupy the same space. There is no limit to the density of light that you can pack into a given area, but at a certain point you create a singularity/black hole. This question is invalid!

;D ;D >:( >:( u beat me to it.

a point of a certain enery density will become a black hole. wat is implied will mean an infinite number of photons vibrating at a ridiculous speed in a miniscule spot. because photons have weight x to the power of infinity = ownage mass. at a certain mass matter = black hole = fail= u die and everything in a radius dies untill beam stops and yeah

impossible and not cool(the idea is cool but no being dead sucks)
