I really hate posting in your thread Toaster...............you have no idea!
I have no personal connection with DTR, friends,or such.
You might want to take a lesson in a little "tact"..........
I know it's a lot of $ and it may be a dud, but pls try address it in a better presentation...
You'll get a lot farther in the long run..........

I'll take my leave now......................

I guess the real question is if it is damaged since it was removed using no heat. What kind of thing would have to happen to do this?

Also you did say when telling me how you installed it "I spent less than 6 sec on the pins and this is what happened." in you PM. Six seconds is a long time to sit on the pins with a hot iron. Usually I can do it in under a full second.

I was being generous. I meant less than 2 per pin. The diode was in the copper module. What's wrong vaporizer, I didn't say anything, but ok.

Also, I was going to do this over PM with DTR, and I don't know why he brought it here..

It might have just been a bad diode.

I think you chose to communicate in this thread. You posted here several times before you ever PM'ed me.

I just want to see if we can identify the problem. You were sent two diodes I assume you did not try the other one?

I posted here to check it with them to make sure it was messed up before I contacted you.

I havent tried it because I dont have another copper module to put it in.

Honestly Toaster, "it burns slow" and "it's not bright enough" are not enough to prove anything is wrong at all. Do you have a power meter? How did you set the current on the driver?

That picture doesn't look perfect, but it doesn't look that bad either.

And honestly, even if it is broken, there's no way to prove you didn't do anything to break it. DTR extracted it without heat and never applied any current to it, so the chances he broke it are MUCH lower than the chances that you broke it. You pays your money, you takes your chances. Bare diodes on the forum, at least in my experience, are sold as-is with no warranty, written or implied, unless otherwise stated before the sale. But you guys can hammer out the details however you want if a diode is broken.

Many people on here have broken way more expensive diodes than that. It used to cost that much for 5mW of violet, people have broken $200 diodes many times.

Some of the emitters have failed. This diode is technically dead, but its what IgorT might call a zombie. Lasing still occurs, but there is damage done, it will be a weak for the rest of its lasing life.

To be clear there are no "emitters", it's one ridge. One ridge, one emission area. The different areas of light are just higher-order modes in the cavity.

I know It isn't even close to 1W and you can tell the diode is messed up. I dont have a LPM but it is not hard to tell that it is far from 1W. All I did if press it and make three short solder connections. He didn't test it so he might just as easily sent me a bum diode. There isnt anything I could have done to mess it up like this. It isn't leded and it isnt lasing right either.

I guess I will say it again. I used

6x5404 and A 1 ohm 5W resistor tested it it came out to 1.05A shorted the leads and soldered to diode. put in Host fired up and I get the messed up pattern

Did your zombie have the three mode lines. I had a zombie putting out about 100mW but it was a solid looking no lines. I decaned it to see if it would look any different. Nope like a blue flashlight solid color output.

Yes it has multiple lines as did it's two "lower powered" predecessors. I believe I sold on in the B/S/T section. Keep in mind there are those out there who desire a 100mW 445nm laser which is hard to come by. You could also lower the current and get maybe a 50mW 445nm. IMHO when it comes to the sale, purchase, installation, and use of diodes as a single component the risk is on the buyer. But it varies from seller to seller. Good luck resolving this gentleman and remember it is only a $33 diode we are talking about here so there is no need for anyone to get excited.

Thats too bad sorry to hear of your loss but that dose happen.
Did you ask the seller about this befor buying ? after all he did not make the diodes and
if he removed it with out heat and packaged it well then how can he be responsible for it,
sounds like you may have got a weak one and that is not his fault he can not look inside
of them and tell a weak one from a good one.
it's the diodes manufacture that is at fault here, that is if you didn't do something
to it to cause this problem ?
maby you should buy TESTED diodes like these ones: http://laserpointerforums.com/f39/a140-445-tested-laser-diodes-fs-56018.html
then you are assured to get a good diode.
I myself have lost over $200.00 on one buy on diodes that were supposed to be 12x
diodes and they turned out to be 4x diodes but I didn't cry about it as that is part of
experminting, no one said it would be cheap so suck it up and take the loss and learn.

Peace All...
