Me and my father live down the street from a local pub. We were taking out the trash about 45 minutes ago and some guy who'd just been kicked out of the pub was walking down the street screaming profanities. Me and my dad walked back down our alleyway in between the houses to get back in our back yard, and low and behold, the drunk man followed us.

At first I asked him what he was doing in our alleyway and to clear out immediately. He didn't leave and started to become aggressive. We then told him in a firmer manner to "get the hell out of our alleyway". He then proceeded to pull out a knife and started brandishing it and threatening to stab us with it. Forunately, he was about 8 feet away from us, so I decided I would pull out my 1.6W 445nm laser and scare him off. As soon as I shined the laser at his body he stopped brandishing the knife, yelled "don't shoot", and "ran" (more like stumbled because of how drunk he was) out of our alleyway. We called the police and they're currently searching out general area for him.

Basically, my 1.6W laser saved me and my dad from being assaulted with a knife. I should keep this thing on me more often...

Sounds like he mistook it for the lasersight on a handgun.
An alternative is to unfocus it and use it to dazzle.

Good thing you are unhurt and that people like that are not allowed to run loose, I just hope he get caught.

As Toke said, unfocus it and dazzle, however you approach proved effective...lucky escape, well done.

Glad you didn't shine it in his eyes, bad for you if he sued, bad for the hobby.
I have had a couple of knives pulled on me over the years, the recovery time is longer than if you had been shot.
Pulling a trigger is a simple action, it takes a screwed up person to look into someones' eyes and put a blade into them....
Good job on the quick thinking, better job on keeping all parties involved uninjured.

This is a interesting use of your laser pianoman2011, me myself and I was attacked many times in the past,.. The first thing that comes to my mind is Antwerp, In a blink of a second i was attacked by 2 guys with baseball bats from the back and 2 guys with some other type of weapons from the front,... This happened after i worked with my laser system in cafe d'anvers ,... The funny thing is that the 2 bouncers that saw it happen did not come to my rescue but instead went inside and closed the door,... Luckily for me a survided this violent attack with not to much damage because of my good reflexes when i'm in danger,.......... I wish i had owned a high power handheld laser in that time ! I would have definitively have done the same thing and also use it to dazzle,.. !

worse come to worse you could have always thrown it at him. If it would have be me
that pour sucker would not have been able to hold water for the rest of his short life.

I'm very religious and there is a differance between killing and murder. I'm glad however that it worked out for you and your Dad.

Hmmm....
2 Guys with baseball bats.... plus 2 guys with other weapons....
You must be Superman...
BTW....the stunts fights in the movies are not real...

In real life only 2 guys with baseball bats against an unarmed
victim will easily win.... unless like I said... you are Superman or
in the movies....

@ PM2010..... shining it at his chest enabled him to see the
beam clearly... and with the Blue color he must have thought
it was a new type of weapon and/or sight...

You took a chance to not hit him in the face.. you could have
easily damaged his eyesight with 1.6 watts of Laser energy
and get sued by him...
I hear that in the USA you can get sued for anything at the
drop of a hat....:cryyy:

Glad it worked out OK...

I strongly advise against bringing a laser pointer to a knife fight.

I strongly advise against bringing a laser pointer to a knife fight.

To me it would depend on context, as my knife (and fighting) skills are around zero, I would likely have the best chance with something ranged and easy to use, like an unfocused laser. (Dazzle and run away)

I choose to interpret the "advice against bringing" as "Don't go at all". :D

Edited Statement-

Watch your suroundings, don't go to dangerous places, walk with confidence and carry a big walking stick. A dumb ass thug wants an easy victim not a hard fight.
A knife is a bad defence against another Knife as well. It's a last desperate chance action, because you'er in to close. there is a saying " When two tigers fight one is killed, and the other one is maimed." Courts Don't like weapons on you, It looks as if you had planned to do someone harm.

I'd be afraid that, at a distance of 8 feet, a 1.6 watt laser, no matter how defocussed, would permanently blind someone if aimed at the eyes. For that sort of up close and personal type of interaction I don't think even a 50 mW standard laser pointer could be defocussed enough to to only dazzle without permanent damage.

It's good it wasn't aimed at his head.

Thanks for the responses everybody. I know using as a laser as a defense method is something quite controversial, but to be honest the instinct side of me kicked in more than the "I-hope-I-dont-blind-him" side. He was threatening and advancing with a weapon, so I did what I could to scare him away without engaging him physically.

LOL, yea it's nothing that I would ever plan on doing intentionally :p
