why not have a piece of metal extend outward surrounded by energy? That would give you the blade weight too

If you use force fields that would prevent the energy from escaping... it would be like hitting each other with glow sticks

imo the next step is going to be smaller longer lasting batteries, then maybe diodes that dont get as hot as quickly as oposed to more powerful lasers, once u reach a certain point a more powerful laser really has no practical use, sort of like what happened with motorcycles once they hit the 200mph mark people started to focus more on quality and reliability....so if the same sort of thinking holds true to lasers maybe some day wicked lasers will sell lasers that output at the advertised power *hope*

I'm not afraid to own a super hand held laser. In fact is a dream of mine

lol why? what will make if different then most high powered lasers available today yes the beam will be more visible but u could only point it at the sky otherwise u might burn whatever else u point it at :D

So for cutting through something like a huma... I mean tree, the outer edges of the "energy mass" would have to be strong enough to do the cutting before the metal made contact right?

Light sabers are science fiction, FICTION!!! And I sure as hell hope it stays that way. Teenagers running around with >10w handheld lasers will ruin this hobby for everyone else.

Now on a more realistic note. I think we may see new wavelength diodes in RGB projectors. Also holographic discs technology may be implementing green wavelenghts to operate, so we may see green diodes when Blu-ray discs are obsolete. As battery technology improves, they'll be able to supply more and more power increasing runtime. Hopefully we'll see drivers and regulators with 98-99% efficiency, that would be great.

wouldnt that reach a temp that would come close to melting the metal stopper???

Yes. There's a few ways to look at it.

1. you could have the metal extremely sharp and since we're talking about scifi why not something that is a molecule thin to practically slice through anything plus the surrounding energy.

Or 2. the surrounding energy would be enough to go through since light sabers in starwars wont move past an object unless it burns right through anyhow.

It looks to me that the light sabers are a solid mass of energy... something we cant have or is way to beyond our abilities at this time. Maybe in a few thousand years

EDIT: Maybe a mid conversion of energy to mass

haha then how would u store it? it would just cut through the scabbord then through the floor and so on and so on :p

Not if its in the shape of the sword. Or you could use magnetics.
Or even have it convert back to energy like the shit in star trek
Come on man think outside the box
