How to make my 5mW better?

I bought a laser a while ago and it was awesome, 5mW, you could see the beam fully in the night and it went pretty much as far as you can see. I stupidly tried to pot mod it and broke it and ordered a new one. This one though, is just shit. With brand new batteries this new one fluctuates between alright with no beam and just plain crap. Is there any way to fix this. Also, on dealextreme there are 5mW and true 5mW, what is the difference.
 





You could replace the diode and use a test load circuit to test the board out. You'll be in for more money than that laser costed you.

I order a 5mW 635nm from z-bolt.com the build quality is very high and I am happy with it. (Its a lot better than the 5mw reds I've gotten from dx) Green Laser Pointer and Laser Accessories from Z-Bolt&#174

Nothing, it's just what the seller (dx is basically a middle man on most products) uses to sell more and make their product seem better than others.

That's abusive.I think any dolt knows how DPSS lasers work...in the age of google.
That being said, the number of people who could replace a pump diode is minuscule...and I am being optimistic.Better to buy a higher powered green for low cost!Cheaper and easier.
Did I mention how hard it would be to repair one where the KTP crystal is glued to the window of the pump?I can't.And I have a good microscope too.....

Usually the True 5mW on DX is more overspec than the normal version.

JamesBwoii- I don't think you can fix it. DPSS lasers are tricky, and if came out of the factory as crap, I highly doubt you'll be able to make it any better.
 
I saw a really good video somewhere on the forum on how to hack a 5mW pointer.
It involved a hammer and a plastic trash can. :D
 
I followed the instructions on that thread and now get 212mW out of my 5mW pointer!
