How well do laser goggles work?

I'm freaking out about how I can kill my eyes very, very easily.

So let's just say I am wearing goggles, and a reflected beam hits me (with the goggles on) - say 150mW (an opto)

Is there any real danger?

Also what's the deal with the IR, optotronics doesn't filter it out.

Also does it matter which goggles I buy or are goggles just goggles?

Obviously I know I need them to filter out 532nm for a green laser, but I mean in terms of which brand of goggles, or the cheapness of them etc
 
The quality of the goggles can vary WIDELY.

However, for occasional, quick, accidental flashes from reflection, just about any goggles made to filter green will do.

For the situation you have described, Wicked Lasers green goggles are plenty.

However, if you are going to go into high-powered green (<300mW) or are going to be looking INTO the beam for any reason, the dye in the Wicked Lasers goggles will burn/boil off too quickly. In that case you will need more high quality goggles like the ones from OEM.

All I have to offer is that "you get what you pay for" really really applies here.

I could not trust cheap protection for my eyes.

Affordable, maybe but cheap never.

IR is far more dangerous as you cannot see it, so therefore you may not even notice until the damage is already done.
 
These threads should've been combined, also you could've searched the topic and saved yourself the making of two retorical threads... _As far as your question, they work depending on the quality, not always price... I know I've heard great things about wickedlasers goggles, and like Dave said, you need OEM if you'll be staring into a very high power for any reason... I do know from experience that you do not want to waste your money on the goggles from Skylasers.com

I am beginning to understand why these things get irritating, Two nearly identical threads, easily avoidable.

Yeah. NooBs can be tiring, but they are needed < shrug >. Without them, the hobby flounders.

Usually only one or two of us get frustrated at a time so the NooB still gets the needed info. Unfortunately, sometimes, we all crash at once :(

I just checked again this morning. We are all still just humans.

Uhm, are you really sure ? ..... all the time i see news on TV about politic and laws, my doubts in that sense grow a little bit (ok, ok, sometimes more than a little bit :p) ..... :crackup:


Back in topic, the focalprice ones are good for occasional use or for protect from casual reflections, and can hold a 150mW beam focused for at leas 2 seconds (that, after all, is more of that what you need for notice the beam and turn away the head :D) .....

For professional or long term / high risk uses, i agree with Dave and the others, about get a pair of goggles with glass lenses, with the dye molded inside the glass structure, and a certified OD, too ..... but if is just for the safety against the risk of an accidental reflex, instead, go with the cheap ones .....
 
Still though I am a noob with less than 50 posts. The main reason I have little posts is because I do use the search bar. It's not just annoying but it's easier on yourself to use it. I would rather spend 5 minutes searching something rather than keeping up with a thread I made.
