I second this idea. What does he usually do with normal red lasers?

I also think a 5mW is the best choice. There cheap and he can get a more powerful one any time he wants.

Sorry, is it just me, or does anyone think its a little bit weird that a dad has to buy his 16YO son a laser, even a toy laser? Can't he buy things himself? Anyway, I vote for 5mw green as a first laser, then go to higher green, maybe not straight to burning levels.

^ HAHAHAHA
I failed to realize that!

lol yeah maybe trust issues? My parents let me get almost anything as long as its MY money, I can't even fathom having to ask online to see if you should get your teenage son a laser, it's like asking "Should I trust my 10 year old with a new bike?"

That is what my Dad said when I wanted to "blow" 300usd on a 100mw greenie. He let me get it tho, because it was my hard earned money. It arrived and I loved it! The next day he ordered himself a 125mw, He didnt get it at first but after seening mine he knew why i wanted it!

If hes getting it with his own money I say let him get it, assuming hes responsible!

my grandfather does this. I get a laser, he gets a laser. I get a GPS, he gets a GPS. I get a netbook, he gets a netbook. lol :) but my dad is really good at talking me out of buying stuff, and makes me regret getting it, so I got a debit card so I can buy without having to go through him lol.

I think he is looking at it like buying a BB gun. I wouldnt care if my kid had his own money or not. If he was irresponsible he would not be getting a BB gun. Also he might be getting it for a present.

If his dad chimed in again it would end a few debates and get it back on topic.

it's possible that the dad logged on his sons account or something, who knows.

My theory?

When I was living at home and wanted to get into lasers my dad was nervous (for various reasons) and had me do a lot of research and also did some of his own - the conclusion was eventually reached that I would not own a powerful green laser while living at home. I'm assuming that this thread is about a debate like this...

Beat me to the "punch line" on that...

I just read the linked post, It clearly looks as if dad has signed on with sonny's account....

If you've been to at least one rock concert since 1980 you wouldn't be asking that question.

Its the same reason you bought him crayons. In hope he may use them one day to create something interesting and beautiful. If not he will get bored with it and throw it a way like he did his crayons.

You should point him here. We hammer these guys with lasers safety, and have may projects if he gets into the hobby.
Well let's see you made a valid point the laser shows that I seen at Rush, ZZ top, Pink Floyd the Wall-yes the Wall ,KISS, and YES just to name a few concerts that i seen since 1980- they are awesome to watch. Like all kids, my son broke his crayons and tried to eat them too. He had a red laser pointer that made it to school. My concern is safety, not creativity. But thanks for the info on the "hobby" portion of owning one. He only told me they were cool.

Was there ever any mention that his dad was buying his laser? This is his mom and he has his own job, money and card. However, I was told in our state they were illegal for minors to own. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt however, since it looks like your 24 and still in high school and I'll look into the 5mw.

Haha, yeah I made this account pretty quickly a long time ago before I started using it, and I chose a random date. I'm really a bit younger than your son. And sorry for my post, I'm glad that you are paying attention to the legal issues, you really care about these thing's safety.

You have to excuse our assumptions. We are a 99.98% male forum.

I would have loved to see The Wall but I was 13. You're lucky, they didnt play many shows because of financial reasons. I did see Floyd in '97 though.
