I've begun working on my PHR build, and when I set it to infinity, I noticed the dot gets real big, real fast. Is that because I'm using the cheap default lens for now, or is that just how the PHR operates?

It's because 405nm plays tricks with your eyes, makes the dot look different/blurry. You are going to need laser glasses to infinite focus.

You are also going to need a friend downrange to let you know when the dot is at its smallest.

Peace,
dave

Thanks guys. I never fail to learn new stuff on this forum. Hey you all need a good laugh? I broke my second diode hehe. Broke the pins off the actual diode....:( Thankfully I listened and used the PHR.

its good that you only broke it.. me i killed 10 phrs before i learned hehehehe

Ouch, learning curve a little steep eh?

Heh, it's a real pain in the ass soldering the rkcster drive to the diode and getting it all to fit inside of the aixiz housing. I gotta find some thin wire...Think a wire from a cheap dc engine (The super thin copper wire wrapped around the magnet) will be good, or too thin for 120mA?

One of the other members mentioned using a mirror ro reflect the laser back so you can look at the diameter of the dot without the need of a buddy. Of course wear your protective glasses since it's a risk due to reflection.

I don't think this works. Due to the imperfections in the mirror, the beam always becomes wider I think.

Even when the mirror is a few meters away, my green laser's beam becomes very wide.

enlarge the back hole to about 3/8 inch it helps out big time Rog told me about that one thanks Rog !!!!!!!

i use a dremil

Are you thinking of jumping leads to the diode from outside the module? If so, it would probably be best to use insulated wire. The magnet wire you mentioned from the dc motors do have a thin enamel coating on them for insulation but it probably wouldn't be best to use that.
