Greetings to all laser enthusiasts! Trueblue here from the windy city has recently joined the bandwagon in a DIY blue ray laser! I am so psyched since i am a noob and this will be my first time building something from scratch and assembling it together. I love the learning experience and cant wait to see the finished product. The parts that i have recently ordered are as follows:

*Dorcy jr flashlight
*aixiz laser module
*Lava Micro Flexdrive (preset at 115ma)
*Dark horse aluminum heat sink (full body)
*PHR-803t 405nm laser diode sled

In addition i intend to do a separate thread dedicated to show you my building process with full pictures and description. So stay tuuuned! :beer:

Welcome to the forum, and your newest addiction.

Just like Grix said... you will LOVE your bluray!!! Be sure to double check your current settings with a test load! Come on down to the bluray section and absorb as much as you can. Don't forget to take lots of pictures of your build!

Hey Mike! Thanks for the warm welcome. Im still waiting for my flex driver to come in which is supposed to be set at 115ma. I have been reading this thread: http://laserpointerforums.com/f51/driver-test-load-phr-803t-schematic-40482.html, in regards to test loads. Forgive my ignorance, but what is the point of doing a test load on my flexdrive driver if the current is already preset at 115ma? What are the consequences of not doing a test load? Lastly, before soldering my driver to the diode, do i have to short the capacitor on the driver? If so, what is the point of that? Your help is appreciated.

Well lets say Drlava set 30 drivers that day and sent you one set at 300mA rather than 115mA. Dead diode! Shorting the cap is optional and recommended to discharge any residual voltage that could spike and damage the diode. This thing is very sensitive. Hope this helped.

Testing out the current with a test load is just for percaution. Mistakes happen.

Also, I have found that using a dead diode will act the same as a test load.

This also, IMO, means that it really is pointless to buy a preset driver, because your going to end up checking it any way. :)

Yes, do short out the capacitor on the driver. Capacitors are made to store energy and release all of that energy in an instant. If you don't short out the capacitor, you risk sending all of that energy stait to your new diode and that can kill it.

Welcome to the forum! Just in case you ever get stuck or would like access to an LPM to test power outputs, etc (or just to have a beer and talk lasers) I live just south of Lake Geneva on the WI/IL border - PM me if there's anything I can do to help out!
 
Mike, you know the next time I'm in your neck of the woods it'll be with a case of beer, my LPM, and the laser collection...
