Laser Warning Signs From White Sands

The dad of my friend Tyler is a bat biologist and occasionally does work for white sands regarding... bat stuff, I don't really know. Anyways, Tyler saw some warning signs were they were camping out and took pictures of them. He sent them to me because he knew I liked lasers lol. So the first picture is the whole sign and the second is a close up of the laser part. Also, is it just me, or is there a bullet hole in the laser sign to the bottom/right of the laser 'dot'? Maybe it's from a laser ;)

I tried using the "insert image" button to put the images here but they were HUGE, so here's the link to the ImageShack Gallery:

Oh also, I used to come to this site a lot and just sorta browse and make occasional posts. The site layout has changed dramatically since I've been here and was wondering if you guys could let me know of any cool new laser news. Like if the PHR's are now considered extremely old and some new 12x burner has taken there place or something. I remember when the little 15mW lasers from the ps3's were popular and then the PHR's took their spot.

It is a bullet hole. Many rural areas have people that think signs are targets. I live way up in Maine and if you get out on say rt 9 in the land of nothing you see this allot. I used to see it all the time when I lived in MD as well. Not in the populated areas but when you get outside the population they seem to appear.

That is the largest laser warning sign I have seen! That is awesome!
And I would definately call that a bullet hole.

Recently development here has been towards using 8x blu-ray but they have still only been experimented with by a small number of people here.
IIRC they often do higher than 400mW and a "freak" diode was well over 500mW.
PHRs are still used by plenty of people.

In other news, IgorT has overcome the tax trouble he was in and managed to get his orders completed.
daguin has been robbed and had some personal problems which have caused him to leave for an unknown length of time :)cryyy:)
Jake21/Jake22 has been banned after causing a lot of trouble, ignoring buyers for over a month and making up a load of bullshit reasons for it.
Day has apparently screwed over one or a few people in a GB and has not been seen around for a while.
wesdaman has been let back onto the forum following the change.

Enough with the gossip, welcome back (;
Those dramatic stories were the ones which stuck most in my mind.

Don't they have anything better to shoot? I bet some government person made a bet with his friend to hit the sign or something.

Has IgorT started to sell his specialized lens's for the blurays? That sucks to here about daguin, he was cool. Were any of his crazy lasers taken? I remember him having a lot of cool and expensive ones like a few argons or something.

Now... off to see how much the 8x's are. lol.

He has not started selling them to my knowledge.. his research came to an abrupt hold when he first had to deal with tax issues and then afterwards make all his customers happy. Other people on the forum have worked on specialized lenses too though, and some results are good. I do not know the specifics about any of this however.

As far as I remember his RPLs and some other portable lasers, and some guns were stolen.. they left his gas lasers and many loose parts.
He took it really well though and said it was just stuff, whereas the rest of his problems were of a more important nature. As you say he is a cool and nice guy and I really hope he is doing fine.

Hehe the 8x's won't disappoint you if your last BR experience was with PHRs (;

It says "rangefinder"

Old militar rangefinders (tank versions, mainly) uses Nd:YAG pulsed lasers at 1064 nm, and some long distance units are really potentially dangerous (SSY-1 unit is one of them)

But that sure don't punch holes, LOL !

I think you should worry about the bombing more than the range finder laser there :p

Well... it doesn't really say "range finder" it says "laser range" but I do agree with you that the lasers in use are probably rangefinders for bombs etc.

Pulsed yags pack some power... they can bunch holes in metal but not at any sort of distance. Probably a bullet hole.

The range is probably used by aircraft. Laser designators are used to "light up" targets. There are video screens hooked up to specialized caermas on the aircraft. That allows the pilot to see the target. Some munitions also use laser targeting. You'll see that sign at a lot of bombing ranges.
