Laser product idea?

I hate to throw a big old steaming turd in the party punch bowl...but if you make one for your self that is no problem...but if you "intend to enter it into commerce" you will find out that it is illegal.

I was more thinking of just brainstorming right now. I wasn't intending to build an sell any but come up with a solid idea and perhaps sell that to some company/invention firm to expand on.

Personally, this is the very first DIY project I am going to tackle. For myself. No sales :)

Maybe make a work log so others can get an idea of what I did? I do those all the time for my computer case mods.

I think you might be on to something...

Slap a big old 2"x2" red white and black danger label on her, put a key switch which cant be removed when it is in the on position, install a 30 second delay from the time you push the start button until the time the laser fires and you are right on top of it because that is what you would need to sell that to some company or firm "to expand on". Then all they would have to do is to file an initial report with the NCDRH, get it approved, track serial numbers and tracking numbers to each and every customer then provide quality assurance, and safety reports on an annual basis then of course have a team of lawyers standing by just in case one of the safety interlocks happened to fail.

Sounds like a solid idea to me! Good luck with that!

I actually had a bunch of schematics of a laser lighter that would be perfectly safe and legal.
I tried to get it patented, but they rejected my patent because that idea had already been patented :(

Unless he edited his post, he plans on using this idea for a DIY project and make a build log to share his information and findings on the internet.

Where is the need for the sarcasm Diode_Virgin? As long as he puts a disclaimer in the log and doesn't sell the lighter, the idea seems like a perfectly good project.

Though I would really think twice before using a lighter built around a class 3b laser, to light my smokes, prefer my good ole Rollagas...

The idea though feasible sounds pretty "sketchy" in my mind to say the least. I treat all lasers even 5mw ones like they were loaded weapons.

Post them.

Maybe they can get some ideas from them.

Did you guys look at the link I posted? A lot of good ideas there...

I guess you missed this part of his post...

"I wasn't intending to build an sell any but come up with a solid idea and perhaps sell that to some company/invention firm to expand on."

I am usually pretty well informed before I make a statement.....usually...

Ok true true that part was pretty far fetched, I admit I read up until "I wasn't intending to build an sell any" :D

Even with the last part of the statement which is theoretically feasible, that was still a pretty heavy dose of sarcasm on your part, even if a practical commercialized application of the idea is quite far fetched.

*can't find option for bold lettering

(b) (/b)

You have to use those

Replace the parentheses with [ and ]

What I meant to say (as I was in a rush during a break at work) was that yes, I find the idea very appealing from a DIY standpoint. Just a conversational piece used once in a while. No I don't intend to build any to sell. If I was going to build one, it would be for me, no sales.

I would share a worklog on how I did it for those that are interested.

However thinking about the idea, it does sound like a very sellable product if done safely. The more I thought on it, the more I thought it probably would be a hot ticket for the geeks, sci-fi fans, chic crowd, and laser enthusiests. It would be more of a novelty lighter than anything approaching a replacement for normal flame lighters, but still if packaged correctly, would probably sell well.

....And there is the problem in why this would probably never see market. The FDA would never allow this product, simply for the fact that Diode_Virgin is right (though didn't need to be rude about it). Too many safety requirements (which are needed) and the fact that it only would take one kid with a mirror or some idiot cuts the terminating end off the lighter and something bad happens. Take your pick of obvious things a small child (grade schooler) would do with a high-powered burning laser...then move up to the high schoolers and then up to your adult idiot...you can see where that is going.

So long story short, cool idea in concept, not practical in real life for the general masses (and not recommended for anyone).

I just realized I had thrown the schematics away after my patent was rejected :(
I still remember the design though...

I'll draw up new ones.

or just spend like 50 cents and get a.......... lighter

that will light like, 1000 cigarettes before it runs out

seems to me there are better laser projects to spend development time on

but maybe thats just me talking crazy

Not a real enthusiast, that one :D:D:D

I don't think so...
It's just that there is no benefit in using a laser over a lighter.
Like he said, there are much better ideas in the sea.
You just need to fish 'em out.
With a fishing pole made of creativity.
And imagination.
Something unique.
Not what everybody else is thinking.
Something different.
Something gifted.
Something glorious...

Okay, i'm done :p
