Why do you need a UV laser to shine that far?
Exactly (y) Am surprised that nobody asked that already.

Let's see ---who needs an invisible UV laser beam below 405nm to hit a target 100 feet to 1000 feet away.
For what rational, not nefarious, criminal, or illegal, real world purpose/reason?

THe OP could easily make or buy a 405nm in the 1W to 1.5W hand held like this one or similar https://laserpointerforums.com/threads/cypreus-ii-1w-violet-diode-review.90337/#post1314023 which many members have made and is on the edge of real UV at 400mn or below but.....

My best skill in this hobby is eBay. :D for that 375nm pen build I bought an "as-is" Melles Griot laser head that luckily had a good laser diode inside.

I remember that ebay diode you had. How much did the replacement cost?

I would love a sub 254 nm laser to look for SW fluorescent minerals at a greater distance than stooping over with a measly 4 watt filtered mercury tube.

Only person that I know who NEEDS a decent powered UV laser is Dkumpula on PL. He is actively looking for a cheap source of UV diodes for his GITD projectors. Very cool stuff

This is from two years ago, last years stuff was amazing. He would love to find a reliable source of UV diodes that weren't overly priced (in comparison to RGB diodes)

His GITD projectors are INCREDIBLE. It was a treat seeing one in person at least year's SELEM.

I would think they would have a slight improvement in the visibility of the writing beam (lower "violet" brightness). There would be less brightness from the 375nm over 405nm. The fluorescence/phosphorescence would have the same brightness though.
The 375nm would eliminate the violet from the writing beam, leaving only the GITD coat color, though the significant lower power would be a big disadvantage.

I would think it would have something to do with the strontium aluminate he uses.

Pricey stuff.

So are you trying to tattoo people with sunburned ads? Interested to know why you need a coherent source.
there are lots of less expensive leds in the 355 range. Some in the 260s but much lower power. You can get a focused flashlight like beam out of those leds that’s pseudo tight. Spotlight like. Cost is reasonable.

It is possible to activate both the short-persistence zinc sulfide materials as well as the long-persistence strontium aluminate materials using a standard blu-ray diode at 405 nm. However, this results in a visible spot of bright light on the surface when you are drawing. (The spot appears sort of blueish-white and is a mix of reflected 405 and the green fluorescence from the paint.)

If you had a truly invisible UV beam then you would not see this bright spot. Instead, the only color you would see would be the ghostly green fluorescence as the image was drawn. This is likely the reason that DK is searching for a UV diode for his glow-in-the-dark builds.
