Blue custom laser broken? HELP!

Ok so a few years ago I had someone build me a custom laser. Cost me like $500 or something. I can’t recall. I don’t even remember how powerful it was but I believe it’s commensurate with power of an arctic

anyway, laser worked fine with the original batteries (those shady red 18650 9800 mah batteries that had all those reviews calling them scam batteries). Those batteries eventually died and I bought new ones but only 6000 mah. Worked for like seconds.

laser hasn’t worked since! I’m so bummed. Even with new highly rated amazon batteries (see pics).
I can’t even remember how to load the batteries into the laser!

I need help please. See pics. Can someone advise me on repair and/or how to load the batteries ?
(Original guy who built it was recommended thru this forum. Doug something? He doesn’t return emails or calls)

Does the host protect the driver from loading the batteries backwards? If it isn't and you did, toast, if so, the laser diode might still b good but the driver need replacement, does anyone recognize this laser pointer?

Only thing the host had was plastic inserts and those will not prevent me from loading the batteries every which way WHICH I already did.

so basically if I loaded the batteries incorrectly, I could have permanently damaged the laser?! Dude, noooooo! The guy who made the laser never had a warning like that.

now I have to find someone to repair it you think?

There's no 6000mAh or 9000mAh 18650 batteries by the way.

Sounds like a driver/diode problem

Looks like an old Rick Trent unit, I think he used flashlight drivers in some of them IINM.

Did it have different modes, high, med, low, flash or was it just on/off ?

You can unscrew the ring on the front and show us the chunk, looks like an old MX-900 housing.

Hi, That host looks like a XM900 it should hold 2X18650's or 26650's with the battery sleeve removed . It looks like a Rick Trent build , to check it unscrew the bezel on the front of the host. Then the copper heat sink should unscrew in the counter clockwise rotation.
It it is screwed into the host its a Rick Trent build. And yes Red Cowboy is 100% correct rick used flashlight drivers mostly in the 4.5A range.
I have one of those drivers in the misc parts bin in my shop. But you dont need to replace the same driver if its faulty. The pics of the batteries look like knockoff Panasonic cells. I know because I use authentic Panasonisc18650's and they are great batteries.
Also AW cells are my favorites ...
I will answer your PM about the issues your having with the build.

now that I think of it I believe it did have different modes. Keep in mind the power of it freaked me out so I’d simply turn it on for a few seconds to show friends camping and turn it off. I’m neurotic about safety -

I've got one of those. I think I bought it directly from DTR when he no longer wanted it. Regular 1.8W blue.

If you don't have a DMM, a lab-grade power supply, and some electronics background knowledge, your likelihood of fixing it is exceedingly low. We see these "my laser is broke" threads pop up all the time and approximately none of these individuals follow up with any progress. I would recommend either shipping it to someone else that can repair it, or just buying a new one. $50 I think should get you similar power.

Hi,
yes I was correct that is a XM900 host with a Rick Trent sink . I really do not like multi mode drivers they are for flashlights and not lasers.
They are Chinese flashlight drivers and personally I will not use them for laser builds.
Send me the build and I will find out all the issues for you. Its a great host the Xm900and I have some in stock they holds a massive sink for high power diodes.
Here is a pic of how I machine a XM900 host.
