For this one I'll be using a LeadLight pen host, but ill hit you up for future builds! I successfully extracted the diode after lots of filing. I was going to continue working on it tonight... but I'm 4 shots of tequila deep for my little sister's 21st bday so that probably won't happen...

I'd be afraid to file it out, how robust are the little wires inside against that kind of vibration? Looking forward to news on the diode.

I have a lot of fluorescein and analogs around and can try using that for an air glow.
If you make a mist containing fluorescein, won't it settlle down on all objects in the house and make everything yellow fluorescent?

Btw why did you take the diode out of the optics assembly? There might have been some surprise optics to correct the beam that you'd reconsider building it into a leadlight. ;)

I mapped out the QR code, gray spots are uncertain pixels. No luck being read online. Still gotta figure out the pinout on this thing...would like to avoid doing it by trial and error if possible. Edit: Maybe it's the Nichia NDU1113E?? 3 pin...

Yeah I can't say filing is great for it, but this is how I extracted blu-ray and DVD burner diodes in the past with high success (minus the open can diodes, screw those things.) I had the mount held tightly in a vise, so vibrations were dampened pretty well.

You're saying a coating of happy glowing yellow on everything is a bad thing?? :D

Yeah I won't be doing the fluorescein thing in my house, but I'll do it at my shop and let the fog roll outside. Or maybe just fill up a big clear palstic container with the fog.

As for the original optics assembly, I really had no use for even a well corrected, stabilized CW 375nm laser. I want to just have a true UV laser pointer and I've been wanting to do this for YEARS. My list of future possible experiments includes pumping materials with UV lasers, but in that case I'd be better with a simple 337nm N2 laser or a Q-switched frequency tripled YAG at 355nm.

BTW your username looked familiar so I looked through some of your old posts...you've been here since the beginning! I think it was your RG yellow thread that inspired me to try my first experiments with laser color combining.

Wish I could resize pictures on mobile...but the diode works!!!! I thought the diode was LED'ed at first but realized my supply voltage was too low. Wish I hadn't fried all my variable PSUs but threshold current is apparently high, near 100mA. The diode is case negative which means I can't use a micro boost driver, so I'm gonna try a flexdrive and hope it can handle the high forward voltage.

Good news---you are having good luck so far

Yes good luck indeed! Wasn't fried before it got to me, didn't break it during extraction, and got pinout correct on the first try. Hardest part done now, although pen builds are still a PITA. Plus if the flexdrive won't handle to high forward voltage, it won't be going in a pen.

And here is a photo of those lovely photons:

Not that I doubted you, but holy tap dancing cows, you got light! Great news. Any idea what these diodes sell for new?

Well done Styropyro. Lovely uv laser you have there. Now onto the handheld.

Nice!

That photo makes me feel better about my old vice.
This vise isn't even that old! I bought it 4 years ago, although it got exposed to some hydrochloric acid fumes and got a nice layer of rust almost immediately. :D

Cheapest source I can find is Thorlabs for $4397. My diode is likely an older engineering sample though. https://www.thorlabs.com/thorproduct.cfm?partnumber=L375P70MLD

Thanks! Yeah next up is putting it into a host. Gonna go with a Leadlight, not sure if I'll go with black or chrome. Back when I scored some 476nm diodes, I ran into the issue of high Vf, case negative diodes and was forced to use a flexdrive. Although that setup worked, these have an even higher Vf.

I wish you luck. And I'll look forward to seeing the results as i'm pretty sure you will pull it off. :)

That will be one exceptionally rare pointer---probably the only one.
Good luck--looking forward to it happening---be careful.
